How is your weather? (Part 2)

@marten Thank you! There are several apples and a large red leafed Cardinal crabapple back behind the pears and bush cherries. When they are in full bloom, it is very pretty. Truly, I just love to see all fruit trees in bloom! It brings joy and peace to my heart.

This has happened every couple years since I moved here (VA). I’m not too far from you and I expect to lose a lot of flower ovaries/fruit.

Where I am we are supposed to have sustained cold temps and there’s not much to do about it.

I put a pdf of the damage thresholds below.

Forecast for tonight and tomorrow night is 26 and 28, but typically it’s been colder than forecast. A couple of my pears are in full bloom, cherries and one apple (Zestar) is blooming, other apples are at full pink stage. So I’m not too optimistic about them making it thru unscathed. Maybe ice on the blooms might help, but I’m just guessing.

Plus all this wet weather and now cooler weather isn’t good for blooms or pollinators, so it’s just another crap shoot season here.

Yes, not a bee in sight. They usually don’t come out if the temps are under 50

Thanks so much for the chart!

35° and spitting snow. It’s been miserable.

We’re still waiting on that first 70°. 63° is the highest for the year so far.

Oh they were all out buzzing the trees last week, bumblebees, honeybees, wasps, etc, when it was sunny and in the 70s, but I doubt they’ll be out when it’s cold and damp like this.

35F with a little sun now and again. Brutal cold for having no snow on the ground/time of year. Yuck. Springs like this make one not want to live here. Winter just seems to never end.

I look at these cold spells as decreasing the chance the blossoms will get killed by a late frost, since the cold keeps things dormant longer. It is sad to read about fruit crops being lost farther south.

Low of 32F predicted tonight, 27F Tuesday night. My peach trees are post bloom and apples are pretty much full bloom. :frowning:

21.6F last night and an inch of snow early this a.m. with more on the way. Teens for the next two nights and we won’t be seeing 50’s again until next week. The orchard is clear of snow, but the wooded / shaded areas still have a foot or two. Keeping everything dormant and that’s okay by me.

Good reminder. After a couple weeks with highs in the 60s-70s I’m expecting 25F tomorrow AM for a few hours.

Peaches at petal fall, pear full bloom or petal fall, bunch of apple at full bloom, paw paw blooming……

Me too. Fruit trees are still small and not a big deal, but worried about the 25 degree overnight setting back my peonies and perennials. I guess I’m be spending this afternoon covering them with remay. Damn it a few days ago the forecast was 30 F and now this.

My 80-year-old mom is flying for the first time in her life today to NYC. 1st time she’ll see the ocean too. It’s never too late.

31 here this morning, they missed it by 5 degrees on the high side. Here’s hoping their forecast of 28 for tonight is off as well. First day of bright sunshine in about a week, but it just climbed above 40, stiff north breeze is keeping it cold.
