finally broke 20 today. 1st time in 7 weeks. felt warm with the sun.
Great morning sunshine got up to near 70. Raining this afternoon, but I’ll take it. Going to check on my trees Friday. I’m sure I’ll have buds popping by then.
-1F this morning. Getting to a point here where subzero temps should start becoming rarer. Extended looks mild. Thurs nite shows a low of 29F.
last day of 20’s then windy and cold again. not -30 cold but consistently cold day and night. hopefully it swings the other way soon. its getting old.
This cold is aimed more your way this time around. We should be 40Fs next week. Winters like this make me hate this season so much. The heat and humidity are easily defeated by modern AC.
if it stayed in the mid 20’s all winter id have no problem. but these consistent single digits w/ windchills in the -20s really bites. at this point 40 would be light jacket weather. we havent seen 40 since mid dec.
Don’t get me wrong I don’t want your cold weather. However, defeating the heat humidity in the deep south with modern air conditioning not realistic . The old units used to last about 15 to 20 years . now you’re lucky to get 10 years. Most warranty only cover five. Forget about just replacing the parts like we used to do not gonna happen.
Non-stop rain, for almost 3 weeks straight! Ugh!
Some needed good rain this morning. Cloudy all day, mid 30s tonight, upper 30s Saturday night, and then the killing colds are over. At least with the current forecast.
yeh i would rather deal with cold than that hot muggy weather you guys get. i could get used to the winters down there though.
After weeks, finally a night above zero last night. Supposed to be a very mild stretch for at least the next week. Yay!
send it my way. ![]()
Yep, we got a couple more inches today over in Lewis county. Our boss called us at work (we both work at Morehead State) around 11am and told us we could go home. It wasn’t snowing too hard when we left but got heavier the closer we got to home. Roads were getting covered with snow, but thankfully it was just that and no ice.
When we got on the next to last road we happened to be about a mile from a plow truck so it was treated. Once we turned off onto our road, it wasn’t treated so we had a slow drive. Got to our driveway, and I took it a little too slow going up the hill, and we started spinning out, even in AWD. So I put it in reverse and backed down the hill and tried it again this time with a bit more speed and we made it up the hill.
Right after we got home we got a text from the school saying school would close at 2pm. We already missed Wed because of another quick two inches on Tuesday evening right when we were driving home. We still had most of what we got two weeks ago (4” of snow/sleet/ice), so this week’s snow just added to the misery.
Some pics from today:
Our unplowed road
Our unplowed treacherous driveway
Windy! Driving in NC and VA hill country will certainly be treacherous. Haven’t seen a blow like this since April of 2018.
It is going to be a terrific day. About 50° right now with sunshine high only 66 not a lot of wind absolutely my favorite time of the year to work in my Orchard. You can count me as strange but this is even better than harvest time for me. I like to go out and examine every tree because it’s easy to see without the leaves, prune it and decide on my fertilization schedule.
-10 this morning and sunny. Got down to -22 a couple weeks ago. Supposed to warm up tomorrow and get above freezing most of the week. Going to get sloppy with all the melt water running on top of ice.
As usual for the deep south, a warm winter turned cold for a 2 week stretch. I’ve accumulation most of my chill in the last 3 weeks.
With this coming week’s highs getting well into the 70’s, I should see serious bud swell. Hope we don’t get a late hard freeze.
Average last feeeze here is around the 3rd week in February but we’ve been surprised as late as mid-March before.
I have a 4 in 1 multi graft arriving today from Grow Organic: Fantasia, Saturn, Red Baron, Mid-Pride, and Double Deligh. I hope the variety they didn’t graft is the Fantasia as it has the most chill requirement.
No offense, but this northerner got a chuckle from your unplowed road and driveway. I wouldn’t waste my time and gas plowing that little bit of snow. Our gravel road and driveway looks worse than that from December through March most years.
