How is your weather? (Part 2)

Currently -6F at Noon. We got up to -4F for a few minutes and it dropped again. We got snow last night, but avoiding going out to clear snow… maybe tomorrow… or in a few days.

None taken.

My tractor is out of commission so I wouldn’t be able to plow it anyways, plus it’s rear wheel drive, so I probably wouldn’t want to attempt it regardless. The road was plowed by the county crews a few hours later, so it was in better shape then. Lots of sun today, that helped, but didn’t melt much here on the hill. Haven’t seen the grass in two weeks.

It’s not a problem to get up and down the hill with it snow packed, as long as your vehicle is AWD/4WD. My first attempt to get up it yesterday got me about 50ft up the hill before the AWD Mazda started spinning out. So I had to back down the hill and give it another shot but this time with more speed and it handled it fine.

I have an Accord that wouldn’t make it up that hill despite it being front wheel drive, and our F150 with rear wheel drive, forgetaboutit.

Most of the drive home yesterday was with snow on the road, my wife got nervous about it, so I drove. As long as it’s snow on the road, it’s okay, just don’t want to drive on hard packed snow or ice.

I agree with smsmith! Just a normal day in winter.

Yep, I get it from a more southerly perspective. I lived in Pensacola in ‘84. Different world when it gets cold.

Front wheel drive would get it done most of the time in most of the U.S. Here, it’s a joke. My truck is a 4x4 and our Explorer is 4wd/AWD depending on your definition. We’ll never own a vehicle that isn’t 4x4 or AWD.

I hope your snow and ice melts quickly.

We’re really not set up for it the kind of weather we had here. I even have a 4 wheel drive vehicle and I still haven’t been able to get it out to the main road ( It’s now been two weeks). I’m walking down to the main rain road and getting a ride to go to work. Since it got above freezing and refroze I had to make home-made crampons for my shoes.

Lots of damage in my neighborhood. We have lots of people in poultry and several chicken houses collapsed. Also, small annoying damage like mail boxes or trash enclosures knocked down by the snow plows.

On the main road, there are still huge piles of ice and snow on both sides making it pretty narrow in places. It took a week for them to really get big roads cleaned up. Sidewalks are still really bad in town. It’s supposed to be above freezing for a long time on Tuesday and Wednesday, so I’m really hoping for some melting… but I’m trying not to get my hopes up since it can take a long time for that much ice to melt.

What a fine orange cat!

Yeah he’s our latest farm cat, I think he’s the eighth one since we moved here 12 years ago. It’s just hard to keep one around. The longest one has stayed is about 5 years.

This one is five years old, we got him from my wife’s friend last year. He’s the first cat that’s been fixed so hopefully that’ll keep him from wondering off. He’s been here since last May and he doesn’t go far.

He was quite chubby when we got him, he spent his former life in an shed and got fed twice a day. We feed him once a day because he’s a good hunter and doesn’t need as much kibble.

Here’s what he looked like now and then.

Omaha, NE is calling for 70F tomorrow. Getting closer. Mid 30Fs here today again. Most the snow is gone outside of piles.

-20 out there right now here in N VT. Windchill factor has hit -50 and below a few times this year. They said we’re zone five now with climate change. I didn’t believe it when they released the new maps and here we are. Thankful for a test winter immediately after planting ~500 trees in 2025! At least we have ~three feet of insulating snow on the ground.

Wow I can’t believe you are still locked in! I have to assume NoVA was well cleared as I haven’t been hearing any gripes from people over the river. Your county just doesn’t have the equipment to deal with it? Are kids still out of school?

that will weed out the weak ones. hopefully they are still small enough to be protected under the snow. most people dont realize that a cold windchill can be as bad if not worse than actual low air temps.

Warmer this week. Finally above freezing for a decent stretch after this snow. Mud season is coming…

Most of our clearing is done by the state. The county schools are open now (they were out for 1.5 weeks) but there are some bus routes that aren’t running. There isn’t much to be done about it since we have a lot of gravel/dirt roads, can’t really do the salt spray.

At this point it’s 55F and I’m wandering around in shirtsleeves like it’s summer! But it takes a long time to melt the big piles of ice and thick ice. My driveway is still pretty bad. My yard doesn’t look different, but I walked around and sank into the snow in a bunch of places! So no longer a complete ice sheet.

It’s looking like another early spring coming on. I fear trees breaking dormancy too soon and getting hit with a deep freeze.

Same here in the south west of England. I know it’s got a reputation for being rainy, but some places have had rain every day this year so far. That’s well beyond the average.

finally a chance of getting above freezing this weekend. will be the 1st time since mid dec. long terms looking better for temps next week as well. its been a cold one. luckily as cold as its been during the day, we havent had any actual temps below -15f. which is strange as cold as its been.

-20F was our low. We will start running out of time to drop below 0F. Usually by early March it doesn’t happen anymore. Once we lose the rest of the snow that will keep temps up some too. Days are getting noticeably longer. My peach pits are all starting come alive. I planted up 5 of them.
