We have never had a fresh fig, and we feel like we’ve been waiting forever for some figs to ripen!!!
Hurry up, figs!!

depends on the variety

I’m new to figs also, and had one this year that stalled out for at least a month and then ripened immediately when I gave the tree some fertilizer. Seems obvious in retrospect…
I up-potted it into a bigger pot with new soil maybe a month ago, it should have enough fertilizer for right now, and it even started growing some more and it looks great.
Nice I’m planning on getting a FP. I have a Black Madeira KK which is possibly synonymous and they’re still kind of small. I’m wondering if I’ll even get any in August. So far I’ve had figs from Florea, Black Mission, Panache, Kadota, adiriatic JH, White Madeira, Hollier, Genovese Nero, Desert King, Olympian, Peters Honey, Golden Riverside.
I tell my friends to get Hollier, LSU Tiger and Florea for early figs. I think Celeste and Green Manchariska are pretty early but I haven’t tried them here.
Nice, which are your favorite so far?
I recently went a little bit fig crazy because I planned on having stuff for a farmers market someday and people were asking for figs at the farmers market and no one had any. I tried to pick the best ones by using other peoples opinions.
We have been so lucky all of the figs that we purchased are doing well and I even got eight fig sticks and all of them appear to be growing leaves so hopefully they are rooting as well.
Here is a picture of one of the fig kids that we rooted from a stick
If you plan to sell at a market - I would focus on productive/early varieties as well. FP is on the later side. Mora de Caneva is know to be a productive and quality fig. Can’t go wrong with a Mt. Etna type either.
Funny you show that one because so far this year AJH might be on top with Unknown Pastillere. I forgot to mention that one. But you need a wasp it’s a smyrna type. Also Hollier has been a sugar bomb. I don’t think I’d be without that fig. It doesn’t seem to split or sour even in our super hot climate. Fruitnut recommended Ondata I’m trying to get that one for sure! They’re big too.
Yes, I want Ondata too! Also because Fruitnut recommended it.
Are you sure Adriatic JH needs a fig wasp, when I checked it out I saw this:
Pollination: This fig requires no pollination in order to set fruit.
No that’s a common fig. It doesn’t need pollen to hang on there to ripen.
The Unkown Pastilliere does need the pollen. You’re good to go with the AJH.
This is my second tree. I had one for about 15 years and it died. This one’s only about three years old. I think it must’ve grown 3 foot since the spring loaded with figs this is a Celeste fig. I went through the same thing before with the first tree it takes about three or four years for a young tree to get the cycle . After three or four years, you can set a clock by them last week in June or 1st week in July in South Louisiana zone 8B… I am sure all of these figs will still be on there in October if I don’t clean the tree. Which I plan on doing mid September. Just gonna have to be patient I thought I was gonna have some fig preserves this year.
VdB and Red Lebanese Bekka Valley are Mt. Etna types?
Would you name some Mount Etna types so I can see which ones I have belong in that category?
I’m in California so I might actually have the fig wasp but I don’t know how to find out.
RLBV is one of the best tasting of the early figs, I think your fig selections are probably just fine for your climate given that experts on the forums like Fruitnut were guiding you the whole way
I think it may be too cold where you’re at. I’m not far South from you but I’m in zone 9b and have them.
If you really want to know then take some fig seeds and place them in a cup of water. If the seeds sink then you have the wasp. If they float you don’t have the wasp.
Yes, I feel very fortunate. I think I got some good ones.
I ended up with some on a whim, like Mary Lane, but it was half off when I got a different fig so I snagged it and actually it’s a very nice tree. I don’t think it’s the end of the world if it’s not my favorite because I hope to have a little market stand for the locals here.
I had a newly found friend tell me, yellow figs are her favorite.
I did much the same with my fig shopping list this year, almost all recommended choices but then one or two that maybe weren’t optimal
With regards to choosing any varieties of fruit based on flavor… I actually trust other people’s taste buds more than mine
I’m a cheap date, I think everything tastes good so I always defer to the connoisseurs
I have two figs. My Ronde de Bordeaux are ripening now. Turning black! Sweeter when they are totally black and soft. Had one for breakfast and five two days ago. I can never get enough of them, so sweet and delicious. My mediterranean temps are perfect for them. My Longue d’Aout did not have one fig this year. Perhaps next year. It is now three feet tall.
