Integrating rabbit barrier into a long hedge

We are planting a hedge to fence out one side of our orchard/garden area. Would ideally like to keep out rabbits.

I was thinking about putting some 1-2’ tall rabbit wire near the base of the new shrub plants, but also want to be careful with both aesthetics and not hurting/girdling the shrub (cheyenne privet) over time.

Anyone have any experience or ideas about something like this? I’m not sure how small the opening has to be to prevent mature rabbits from entering. I have heard 1" opening is ideal, but wasn’t sure if 1-1/2" would be OK for mature rabbits.
