I put one “NC10” almond seedling in ground this year. It was about a little more than pencil thick and about 3 feet tall. $21.50. It seems to be growing more vigorously than the Nikita / Oracle from Raintree (both died after 1 season).
I put in Prima and Bounty. Bounty died the next year and Prima is growing really slow. I’m going to put in peach seedling and let them jet up to five feet and graft almond to it then. Maybe this winter if we get anything to cut we can swap.
Where did you find those?
@Robert Perfect Circle had them for fall shipping. I just double checked and the listing is sold out, but says they expect more for spring shipping.
Anyone have javid and Nikitski scions for sale? Interested in replacing my other’s that died over last winter. Thx! Might have some scions for trade as well.
England’s probably has scions; it’s in their 2023 list.
Interesting I got mine around the same timeframe, no leaves and dormant. I already planted them in the ground.
I bought a large and small Javid from PC this fall also and the large (size of buckeye’s) was leafed, small was not.
My son had a service call to this house today here in our area. This is an almond tree. As you can tell it has quite a few hanging on the tree. He tried one and said they tasted good.
I have some stuff in the main fridge which is 40F (don’t think everyone else would appreciate if i made it colder as it freezes items on the top shelf then.
Noticed 15% of my Javid almond seeds (and Aromatnaya quince seeds) sprouting.
Should i put in a pot with dirt near window or just let it keep pushing roots slowly for next few months while in the fridge?
I do have a 2nd small fridge that’s maintained closer to 35-38F i can move them to (but some have anyway already started growing … i thought they were a cold hardy almond, so i assumed they would ‘wake up’ later).
I think your seeds are sprouting because they were exposed to warm temperatures during shipping. The rest of my seeds are still dormant.
I’m sorry this happened, and I’m just as surprised by it as you are. If you want, I’ll send you more seeds closer to planting time.
Hey Imvian, no big deal :), just was curious how long they can root in the fridge before i should plant indoors. As ive seen pawpaw seeds for example ive heard root for a while in fridge if they leave them in fridge too long. Wondering how long the almond seeds can keep rooting in there.
I’m honestly not sure how long they’ll survive in the fridge like that. The cold will slow down the seedlings’ metabolism, so growth should slow too.
This happened with some goumi seeds I have. The recommendation I heard was to go ahead and plant them outside. Goumis and almonds are obviously different, but what if you put them in a raised bed to root and relocate them in the spring? The worst of this winter’s could should be behind us.
