I am wondering if anyone is growing this variety (likely purchased by David Vernon at Century Farm)? I would love to learn more about its taste and disease resistance, and overall growing experience from anyone. There is basically no info online about it. I have heard from others on a FB group that it’s nothing special to eat, but very bulletproof which is very appealing. Pictures also would be great. Thanks for any insights and experiences you can offer!
a very disease resistant apple that was mentioned by skillcult (steve) on his youtube channel was williams pride. its a early apple that produces over a long window in late summer. he gave it good reviews. that’s from a guy that has tasted many hundreds maybe thousands of apples, trying to breed better ones all the time. i also have a black oxford . its a Maine native apple that’s late and has long storage. its dark red/ purple with striking white flesh. it also has very high disease resistant to boot. fedco carries it and praises it as well
I have one on MM111 from Century Farms, planted in November. So far my only comment is that it shows no CAR in an area with an ungodly amount of eastern red cedar (southside VA).
I too was attracted to this apple after reading the description.
2023 harvest first crop. Nice clean apples with no spray. Average tasting off the tree, taste improved with storage.
When did yours ripen?
I’m not growing it but in my yard any apple that is immune to CAR is worth trying.
@greyphase Sold! That’s a good looking apple. When you say taste is average what would you compare it to? I had a Redfree apple last year that this apple kind of reminds me of and it was the grossest apple I’ve ever had…super bland and boring. Thanks for posting, it’s great to see and hear about real-life experiences.
Early October.
Taste is so subjective, but I’d compare it to my Black Twigs which I’m not a fan of.
@greyphase In conclusion, is this an apple you’d suggest growing? It appears easy to grow, but maybe not worth growing due to flavor. In regards to your comparison, I have a Black twig as well but its only 2 years old on M111 so I haven’t tasted it myself.
I agree on redfree being rather bland.
I planted Joseph in the spring from Century Farms. It escaped infection from whatever leaf fungus that infected Suncrisp and Shockley planted in the same row just a few trees away.
Since it was orginally grown in Richmond Va, I expect it to be well adapted for me 60 miles away.
I will be ok with it if the flavor is “bland” as Blacktwig.
Personally I believe it’s worth growing. As I said last year was it’s first crop and it’s flavor may improve as the tree matures.
Anyone growing this apple have any insight on pollination group? Thanks
