Location of any micropropagation labs?

Anyone know of any micropropagation labs that will reproduce a Haralson mutation?

I know a guy that does plant tissue culture as a hobby.

I’d be interested in giving it a try for a very reasonable price. I’m a commercial micropropagation manager but also have a small home lab for the fun stuff. I haven’t cultured apple before but I have worked with a multitude of woody species including forest trees, Rubus, and cherry. Both of which can have similar tissue culture challenges to apple, according to literature. Just let me know :+1:

I will keep you in mind. How much material would you need?

Thanks for joining @Mace_in_space. @6mt6royal I just invited Mason to join the forum so that’s why his account is new, but please consider him as a serious option. Many micropropatation labs don’t give the time of day to smaller scale projects (as in smaller than large wholesale nurseries) so it’s great that Mason (@Mace_in_space) is working to make services more available to a wider audience.

I messaged Mason as well with a possible project. Thanks for inviting @Mace_in_space @JohannsGarden! We need more folks willing to give it a go to help the smaller projects along.

My email is donaldchristopherdcb@gmail.com if you want my email.

The invite was much appreciated @JohannsGarden. Glad to be a part of this forum.

@6mt6royal 5-6 12" stems would be a good starting amount for initiation trials. Actively growing stump sprouts and water sprouts are best. Endophytes are a known challenge for apple TC so additional stems may be required. Initiation is free as I need to establish a reliable protocol. Price of rooted plantlets would depend on the culture proliferation rate but I expect it to fall somewhere between $0.75-2.00 per plant for apple.

So basically could you propagate a culture from a rootstock scion?

Yes, I can micropropagate material from rootstocks and scions. Most fruit trees can be tissue cultured using any young and healthy stem but challenging crops have greater success using water sprouts and stump sprouts, though I realize that’s generally not ideal for grafted trees.

There are some biolabs in the Ukraine that are working on mutations. But I don’t know how to get ahold of them.

Would protoplast-fusion / somatic-hybridization be in your repertoire? There’s a few pairings in particular I’d like to try, but I have no lab of my own.

@Caesar I’m interested, PM the details.

So if I can get say Polish P.14 rooted and started; you could start microcultures? How awesome.
