The leaves of this pear are red.
If the leaves are not red, it is not this variety.

The red pigmentation can reverse mutate to a more normal green pigmentation.

Do you have any Scionwood to sell or trade?

This is super interesting, is it like a variegation?

What cultivars are the ones in the two pics you posted?

@tonyOmahaz5 @mamuang

I know everyone will soon realize if they have not already these are Zaosu Red pears. I have been watching this pear trade amongst hobbyist since around 2018-2019.

Hi mamuang, I see references to ‘PC bites’ but no ones says what they are. I presume they are insect bites, but the only thing that comes to mind is ‘plum curculio’, but on pears?

Are scions for sale anywhere yet? I think I asked Fruitwood and they said theirs had green leaves and hadn’t fruited yet.

@evilpaul

Not yet but there are people who are trading mostly 4" - 6" pieces on the forum. I would post a picture and a name in the trades or for sale part of the forum if you want to try them. I would list it as wanted: Rare Asian pears. I know at least half a dozen people are definately growing it now but i think it is closer to 2 dozen - 100 + or more. I suspect sophia was the original source but who knows for sure it could have been at the usda under an unknown name or part of the botner collection etc. Some of the rarest things are in not well known collections like singing tree. Once one of them has it and propagates it the pears will become common and readily sold. @39thparallel is a rare fruit collector. Many times at his orchard i see unique things he has went to great trouble to aquire.

I have red zao su li from Tony but it only grew maybe 6 inches this year. It is not large enough to cut scions yet. Leaves were green with a reddish background color.

Yes. In my location, plum curculio are just as devastating to both Asian and European pears as stone fruits, if not more so. If I don’t spray Surround, curculios will essentially destroy my entire pear crop. It took me 2 years to identify the problem. Went out with a light one night and found the pears covered in weevils.

My Red ZaoSu li has green leaves too. I have another red Asian pear that has red leaves and dark red barks, but I don’t know its cultivar name. It does not vigorous at all.

Randall,
Plum curculio attacks many main fruit crops including pears.

That is strange, in our area that has not been a problem, even though ‘Plum curculio’ certainly attacks our, plums and peaches. Then again we have not had many non aborted pears yet. Maybe the ‘Plum curculio’ in our area have not discovered them yet, since there have been so few fruit.

The dents you get on pears come from PC.

I wonder if damage from the ‘Plum curculio’ could help cause disease problems in the fruit like ‘cedar-quince rust’, disease. One pear on my tree did get infected by the disease in 2021.
