Hello,
I am searching for a yellow fleshed peach variety that grows well in zone 6.
Ideal for preserving but also eating fresh.
I am also looking for something productive.
I found Crest, Glo, Redhaven and Elberta peaches online, but I’m not quite sure which one to choose.
I grow Contender in zone 6b, Ohio, and really like them. They also seem a little more hardy to late frosts.
Zone six takes in a lot of area with differing growing conditions. I would start by looking at your local chilling hours and humidity . Then start culling.
I have Redhaven and also Contender peaches. These are very good peaches. I get more peaches off the Contender than the Redhaven for some reason.
I also have a Flaming Fury PF-35-007 as well- 2024 was the first year it produced peaches- they were very good peaches as well.
It all depends on what weather you get during the blooming time. They bloom and look beautiful BUT if you get a frost/freeze or cold period at that time you basically get no peaches.
I knew that before planting them. So you will get good growing seasons and bad growing seasons- if you are okay with that.
I am in SW Ohio btw- so location even in the same growing zone and even in the same state can get different results.
If you want to grow one for taste Red Baron is a great choice.
Redhaven is fantastic! There is a reason it is such a classic. Here in Rhode Island they get quite large, have great red coloration and taste amazing!
are you lookin for a mroe melting texture or crunchy? sounds like preserving so best to get one that is ab it crunchier
In planted 2 redhaven trees in 2023 and haven’t had any problems besides mild peach leaf curl.
