I’m going to get one of those seedlings from Lawrence, KS. I need a big sweet keeper that ripens in September.
Pippins were popular in the 1700’s. Here’s one of earliest nurseries open to the public with a newspaper ad from 1755 across the river from historic Jamestown Virginia. About 20 miles from my house.
Scratches head…May Apple???..The weird bush fruit or an actual apple???
It also has a May Pear so maybe a selection from somebody named May. The original scan is May so not a typo on the copy of the ad.
As you say It is definately not a typo.
Sometimes things called pear were not always a real pear in 1755. As an example an alligator pear was an avocado.
Great links. I have not heard about the Pipsqueak nursery before. Nice apple selections and nice looking site.
Hmmmm…May apple? John May aka Hubbardston’s Nonesuch???
Could not find a Yellow May. Did find a “May” apple from Wilkes County NC
