If you have the space plant bushes along the inside of the fence or even structures. Deer will not jump even a short fence if they can’t spot a good landing spot.
The bane of our land here is moose. A fellow orchard guy has a fairly short fence on one side. When i asked him about moose he pointed to the boulders pulled up on the inside next to the fence. Even a dumb moose knows better than to risk breaking a leg for apples.
They aren’t jumpers are they? I assumed a moose would just plow through fencing. We had two moose at the gate to the sawmill a couple years ago. It’s not normal for them to be this far south in the Adirondacks, I’m guessing they were two transitory young bulls.
I’ve transplanted 152 trees from the nursery bed to orchard rows so far this fall. I’m so very happy the weather has allowed me to do fall transplants. Rows 8 & 9 are complete, and I have just 13 remaining spaces for trees in Row 10. It looks like I may be able to complete Row 11 and then I’m out of prepared rows. My nursery bed finally has significant open space, I’ll reduce its size and run a couple of the original rows through some of that area. I’m happy to finally see some of the original varieties I grafted planted out in the orchard.
I finished Row 11 today with a total of 64 trees. I don’t have any more prepared rows, so this is probably it for this year. If the weather continues to be mild, I may be able to get the last rows marked out and tilled. I planted out a total of 229 trees this fall bringing the orchard total to 579. I have a couple more varieties on G.222 and the rest of the trees should be apples on B.9 and pears on Quice. I’m happy to see the nursery bed population dwindling.
I thought the same thing! I need to clear some space … 1/4 acre for starters. But, I’ve made little progress. (I need the tractor chipper I guess…burning brush piles near forest has risks).
I think I’m currently @ 579. I’m planting out the trees on more dwarfing rootstock now so planting density is tighter. I have room for probably 150 more trees (on dwarfing rootstock), but I only have about 40 in the nursery bed. That will leave me room for a few varieties I’d like to add, and I’d like to put in a few sour cherry and cold hardy peach. I expect one additional row will finish out my nursery bed and the last two I’m not clear on yet.
