Big Melon grows vigorously. I have another of those growing on another tree. The far right is Nanjing and Porterville is between Big Melon and Baby Red. The lower one on the other side is La Fleur. Hidden Gem and Goose Egg have not grown. 🥲

My Baby Red is just starting to wake up. It’s always one of the last for me.

Porterville came out first with just fruiting stems but now has an upright growing fast. Baby Red took its time…… they all look pretty great!!!

Hi Everyone!
Something’s wrong with my jujube. I don’t know if it’s some kind of pest or some kind of plague?
The previous winter had been harsh, and a few jujubes had had their bark cracked. They bounced up nicely. This year was a mild winter. And the two jujubes are completely dead. The two that remain in their vicinity have such black spots on the stems. I would like to add that the jujubes that grow further in the plot are completely healthy.
After cutting this black wood, there is rotten pulp and infested wood.
The black spot spreads all the way around and all the part above dies. Please tell me what is it? How to fight it?
I removed these stains with a knife and smeared it. In my opinion it is some kind of mushroom but I will wait for your opinion.

i agree itis likely some sort of infection, considering the symptoms(spots). Also makes me think some type of sapsucker or borer drilled into it and introduced a deadly pathogen, and have never come across something like that. Hopefully just an isolated and non-recurring incident.
here, cicadas can cause stem death, especially the smaller caliper stems they slit. But the stem death is usually localized(only the the stem distal to the slits die).

Here is the same branch as it grows next to another graft where you can compare the colors.
This is a nice find. A sucker has come up under my JF&E Contorted tree that is on its own roots. It does seem to have some contortions evident.

All my field grafts that took have grown like crazy. I’ve had three that didn’t swell a bud but the growth on everything else has been crazy good.

sure looks pretty. On my will i request that in lieu of flowers/wreaths— that sprigs of baby red stems be made into bouquets and placed on my burial site

Picked up some “Jujube Tea” from the Korean grocer last week. It’s really a marmelade. Pretty tasty. I think the idea is to pour hot water over it and drink it but it’s also great as a spread.
I’m guessing putting marmelade in tea is something a lot of people do but it had never occurred to me.

yeah it is quite flavorful. I have seen jujube sugar being sold here too(las vegas), which i suspect is made mainly of dried jujube pulp that was crushed into powder. Most juju’s crystallize, as in rock-hard, when dried in low-humidity. Even as fresh fruit, jujus have higher brix than sugarbeets or sugarcane juice.

self-rooted clone of Li that have been keeping celibate, but much as i diligently snipped off the flower buds, i blinked just once and it managed to sneak one in. So snipping off the forbidden fruitlet to stimulate vegetative growth, which is evident at the apical portion as a velvety green upright stem about to get launched
also notable that li seems to be just as precocious on its own roots as it is when grafted onto younger rootstock, taking into account the fruit(in prime condition) it produced last year, on its second year of being cloned.

What method did you use to clone Li?

i used hormex#16 on 2-inch long upright stems, each with a single-noded lateral and having 2-3 leaves(obtained them in May-June when their leaves were already fully developed), and then placed them in tiny pots and got them foggy inside ziploc bags and under indirect light.
if remember it right the success rate for li was 1 out of a dozen or so stem samples.

I was searching for ‘Porterville’ and ‘Panzao’ wood this last winter. I did find Porterville wood and was able to distribute some wood, but I never did find Panzao. I have not been able to verify that Panzao is even in the US, but I have heard a few rumblings suggesting that someone in SoCal may have it.
One seller in California says that ‘Persimmon’ is the same as Panzao, but that seems highly unlikely. Do not fall for that claim. Persimmon has a small flat fruit that has very little flavor, no acidity at all, and not much crispiness either. It’s definitely a second (or third) tier jujube. The photo below is Persimmon -
A grower in Australia has claimed that Portervillle is Panzao. The two do have some superficial similarities, but there is simply no evidence they are the same.
