Minnesota (4b) quince

I’m here to show off my quince harvest, from SE MN. The variety was sold to me as kuganskaya. It has a sweet smell. It has been in ground for a few years and grows as a bush form here. My biggest issue with this fruit is making sure bunnies do not eat it. As you can see they grew from baseball to softball size this year. They are still sour even when baked so we are planning to try and make membrillo. Baked, they would be great over vanilla ice cream.

Beautiful! I got some first fruits from a Kuganskaya I grafted a few years back and really like this variety, I think its a winner for northern areas. Try poaching chunks with water, a vanilla bean and some sugar, you won’t be disappointed

what chances do you think id have growing it in z4a? ive been eyeing quince for awhile and was considering putting one in. any real benefits over apples , pears or plums?

I’m not sure about trying her out up north! I believe it was in 2019? The leader froze off above the snow line. I generally think it’s worth a try though.

It is a novelty for me, and I think if you have apple and pear you wouldn’t miss out too much. I will keep this one but would not choose to plant more as there is no fresh eating value, which I enjoy more about the other fruits. But it is fun to see what I can grow and try a new flavor.

If you have a pear tree you could always give it a test run with a limb graft. Been thinking about it myself.
