MULBERRIES what are you growing?!

I was very surprised to have 2/2 takes with Oscar and 3/3 takes with Silk Hope. As it happens, I had made myself a hot callus pipe for use with persimmons. Even though it seemed unnecessary, I put the mulberries on the pipe as well.

Maybe the extra warmth helped?

This has been my experience as well. Geraldi grafts so easily. Oscar also fairly easy. Silk Hope fails most often and don’t really thrive even when the graft take.

I did 1 bud graft in early July and have a take. First time using buddy tape. I have started doing more bud grafts. Just selections I found on my property.

Anyone have a picture of Sham Dudu mulberry fruits and perhaps can help to describe the flavour? Thanks.

We had a huge decades old Alba next to our front driveway. Huge mess every year. 25’ tall. City cut it down a few years ago as its trunk was splitting.

Now I have a contorted & a dwarf grafted alba, but in pots & not in-ground.

I’ve just started, only 4 young plants (3 cultivars: Pakistan White, Pakistan Black and Thai Dwarf). Anyone knows where in UK I can purchase the more interesting cultivars mentioned here? (Oscar, Austurkey etc).

Hi.The graft is still pretty young (2nd or 3rd year) and I had to transplant the tree last fall. So it hasn’t hit it’s stride yet. But I can say that the graft(s) took quickly and it’s been a champ in our AZ summer temps.

I have a Trader and Illinois Everbearing planted in Z3a. Definitely pushing some zones, but I picked them up on clearance, so may as well have some fun.

i have both of those as well. also riverview and northrop. riverview is a good sized tree but no fruit yet despite me hacking it back to the trunk last spring, to try and induce fruiting. i.e is only 2 yrs. old and is growing fast as well. traders coming along but more slowly. also only 2. northrop is dying but i dont know why as its hardy here.

This is the base of the trunk of my Tice, grown from a cutting this year.

What worries me is that the original cutting died in a freeze and it came back from a node below, and now that’s causing the main trunk to grow in a circle around the dead wood. Will the tree completely cover this and be okay long term?

Thanks

As fast as mulberries grow, I wouldnt worry about it at all.

Thank you. Wouldn’t the dead wood eventually rot inside the tree trunk? Just curious… I want this tree to be here 30+ years

All wood on the inside eventually rots, only the smallest outer bit of a tree trunk is alive, then it’s dead tissue that functions like a straw and then it’s rotting tissue inside of that
It’ll be there in 30 years and that whole time you’ll be able to take cuttings and plant more

What are the best cultivars of white fruiting albas (in terms of flavor)? I have a tree labeled as Persian white which has produced a few tasty fruit and obviously doesn’t stain. Would be interested to try other varieties producing white fruit.

Since you are in the IE, I would grow the long, white Pakistani type like White Pakistani, Australian Green, or Saharanpur local. I would grow Australian Green out of those, but not sure if you can get that easily from a nursery. Are you able to graft?

Thanks for the suggestions. Those all sound good. I just started grafting this year on figs- about 50% take rate :persevere:. Would love to try on mulberry.

Nice! They are pretty straightforward.

Perfect. Can you graft alba onto nigra? And would bud grafting work? I seem to do better with bud grafting.

They are all compatible so yes. I haven’t actually seen it done as I don’t know too many people growing nigras lol. Bud grafting is fine as well, I have done a few bud grafts on mulberries.
