MULBERRIES what are you growing?!

Terrific, thanks!

I grew a Gerardi this year and it grew with four main branches splitting just above ground level. Can this be stool or mound layered for propagation?

Gerardi doesn’t root easily at all but maybe mound the soil up for 18 months and see what happens

I do this mound layering. I use a sewer pipe or bucket to contain the mound. I have 4 mounds going now. Good on ones that do not root cuttings.

Air layers also can work, and they can be pretty easy

Here are two pics of mound layers. I also have 4 air layers going.)

6 inch sewer pipe is a IE. I will get 2 trees plus the grafted tree will resprout next year. Bucket is a Koukuso. Again 2 trees plus resprout.

Anyone have experience with dwarf mulberry ‘Mojo Berry’? I just picked up a tiny one.

I have one Illinois everbearing, and really like it.

I have heard it is very productive but not very tasty.

Oh no! We will see… it was 50% off a tiny tree. Not too much loss if it doesn’t taste good!

I would grow it out to see! Quality can vary based on climate so maybe it will be good for you.

My experience with mulberries… is… the hotter and dryer it is when they are ripening the better they taste.

Mine normally start ripening during cooler wetter weather… and finish up ripening in hotter drier weather.

What varieties or companies are you purchasing mulberries from this winter? I ordered some from Cricket Hill to try planting this fall. I’ve never planted a mulberry in fall. But I think I might try a few more varieties that will ship in the spring. I was thinking of ordering from Burntridge for the new Korean variety or maybe I add another tree to my order from Cricket. What are you guys ordering? Maybe I try some of the hardier types. Trader etc.

@Heath … in the past I ordered Silk Hope and Oscar… from Lucille at Whitmans Farms.

Got nice quality trees too.

The rest of my mulberries… Gerardi, Lawson Dawson, Kip Parker… i grafted.

I have 2 nice rootstock trees I am planting out in my orchard soon… for grafting next spring.

I may duplicate my Lawson Dawson or Oscar… and try one more new mulberry Clarks mulberry.

mine was also t.c from a year ago and put on about 30in. of growth this summer. i was told from others they grow real slow compared to others like i.e in the north. seems in par with my i.e here in z4.

What is the hardiness?

Hi, We’re zone 8a up in the San Juan Islands. Our Thai Dwarf finally perished when winter temps reached 10F which is the bottom of the zone 8A range. Other similar types that didn’t make it include World’s Best, Issai Dwarf, Austurkey/Australian. However, Jan’s Best, Dwarf Everbearing, and Lakeland survived.

We did a video on this and some others that survived or perished during our cold spell. Here’s how some others fared as well… - Mark
