Any suggestions for varieties of mulberries that will do well in Canada? 8b. As well as sources for trading/buying?
Tree Eater Nursery has several. I’ve been growing Illinois Everbearing in 7b/8a PNW for a few years, and been very happy with it. It fruited the first year, but the berries were small, dry, not worthwhile, but the fruit quality has improved noticeably each year. In its 3rd year they were very good.
This is where I purchased my Trader Mulberry that I am attempting to stretch to zone 3. Being in zone 8, you can probably expand to some other providers and explore more varieties, as Whiffletree generally deals with lower zones.
I scrolled down and came across an older Mulberry thread. It might be worth sifting through for links, or reviews on varieties you find elsewhere:
Also have the trader from whiffletree. So far so good. Produced a handful last year, Very good. We’ll see come spring. Ya just never know till spring.
edit, in SK, z3
That’s great to hear! All the best with over-wintering success!
Hi there @Doodlepupkirby, and welcome to the forum.
I assume you live in BC, as I don’t believe there are any zones that warm in Canada outside of BC.
Sadly, Whiffletree stopped shipping most fruit trees to BC last fall leaving BC’ers with very few out of province sources. Perhaps they will still ship Mulberry trees here?
I picked up a Morus nigra ‘Dwarf Everbearing’ Mulberry at Phoenix Perennials in Richmond recently. Obviously way too soon to report on how well it does here.
Nice to see more members joining the forum from BC.
Yes, I’m in Richmond BC. I bought two plants at Phoenix at the end of last season and I’m eager to see how they’ll grow this year!
