My apple collection

Here in Kent, wa we have two main insects for apple infections; codling moth and apple fly maggot. Since I have been using Surround WP the apple maggot issue is under control, but last year Surround alone was not adequate on several varieties I grow, so I took a cue from @Cdmarjian to start using the bug zapper during evenings for moth control. Thanks to Chris this year out of about five bushels I gathered today of five different varieties I only found one apple infested by codling moth! What a difference this zapper makes! No pesticide can beat that! I have the zapper on during the first two hours of dusk and the last two hours before sunrise during moth flying season once my apples are about the size of a quarter. So that’s the ticket!

Early Golden Russet

Synonyme: ‘Saint Edmund’s Pippin’. Originally from England, found in 1870. The fruits are small to medium sized, flat round, yellow to light brown with orange tint on the sunny side. The skin is rough. The pulp is creamy white, crunchy and juicy. The taste is sweet, sour and very aromatic… Aug-Sept

It’s cool isn’t it?

Probably why I was so dashed when D’Arcy Spice couldn’t handle summers where I live. Maybe I need to move where I can grow it…

How hot does it get in Spokane

This past season there were 34 days at or above 90°F/32°C and four of those at or above 100°F/38°C, with relative humidity dropping to 13% most days from late June to mid-September.

In fact, I started noting that temperature threshold because D’Arcy dropped all its fruit at the first instance of 90°F. This happened four years running, with the tree at its full height. It stayed healthy by aborting all its fruit in high summer.

How do you like the Bramley’s Seeding? How long does it normally last before it gets too mealy or soft? Thank you.

I liked it. I was surprized because i thought it would be too acid to eat out of hand but it was really nice. It was big with brix 13,8. It last some time without get mealy
