Once our Nadias start producing fruit, may we create a new thread? This thread is getting too long.
Sure, the first one to taste the fruit has the honor!
Typical for me, last to jump on the wagon. My Nadia arrived from Raintree today. Nice size and shape. It’s now planted and protected from voles and deer, using the usual barriers.
Anyone else have bloom in Nadia? Or is mine leading this bandwagon?
Other pluots and apricots are in full bloom. Bumblebees are going nuts. They practically rip the anthers off the flower. They work the same flower so many times that it might damage the stigma and reduce fruit set. But can’t say I’ve seen that happen in the past. There are too many bees for what little bloom there is on these young trees budded June 2014.
Very nice closed planting Steve and easy harvest.
Tony
fruitnut,
Your Nadia is way ahead of mine, probably by a month anyway. Those are some thick scaffold branches.
I also wanted to ask if the Bill’s Nectar Peach Cot was successful, that I sent?I tried on Krymsk 1 last year. The scion started to grow but then failed.I’m ordering some more from Bob Purvis. Brady
Not I. But then I don’t have climate control to start and end chilling when I want. Even when it does bloom, it won’t have 1/10 the blossoms yours does. Did you plant that one last spring? It looks like it’s doing well.
Yes this is second leaf and I cut off big limbs that had no blossoms. It started slowly but finished strongly last summer. Based on my experience it’s very precocious.
To be honest I’m not sure. All but one took but I’m not sure which one failed. I’ll try to remember to check.
Looks great. Lots of fruit for sure.
Do the bumblee bees ever sting you?
Only when I mess with them. At times I thought I needed to thin the herd. Maybe should now because there are way too many. Then one time some got real ornary about swarming. A couple of those nailed me. Nothing serious.
Wow, I often disturb them on my raspberries, but they at worst buzz my head. Might be a different species? Huge suckers though! Last couple of years we have had an all black bee around. I have no idea what it is? I’m 2-3 months away from blossom. I’m going to hack my Nadia up. I have a suspicious area on a major scaffold. I may have to remove it (the scaffold). I’ll post photos soon, and see if any of you guys can tell me if it’s canker.
Will spraying Copper help at all with something like that if it’s canker? Brady
It can’t hurt, and I’ll do that after I cut it out. Even if it’s not canker, the bark fell off an area, I don’t like that, it’s going no matter what. i will spray right after I make the cut.I’ll take a photo tomorrow. Their is a very small branch right underneath with a much better angle anyway. It’s tiny though!
Oh boy, these are the pictures of your green house that I love. Every tree looks so young but they are all loaded with blossoms. Wish I had a high tunnel. My trees are finally maturing and getting to the 8-10 year mark, and they still don’t have tons of those ‘compact blossoms’ that you and Konrad have. It is just so beautiful. Please pictures of you Apricots (fruit) I so look forward to those.
Mine is also a month away from bloom.
As I said you jinxed yourself! Don’t count your eggs before they hatch.
The white flowers are pluots. They are very fragrant. The pink ones are apricot. I don’t think those have much fragrance.
Thanks guys for posting about this cross here.
I was debating getting this cross, then decided no since I have no room left, then was debating possibly asking here if anyone is buying a new plant who will prune 1 or 2 pruned pieces of scionwood anyway to form a lower scaffold tree to give away …
then saw the excitement on the threads here, and decided yes lol. Just put in my order in RainTree.
Might eventually replace my Jubileum cherry tree with this, birds get 90% of those and harder to protect and don’t taste that great for a sweet-sour hybrid … or I’ll try to make some space by chopping down some small evergreen trees :).
OMG, fruitnut. We are fully dormant out here in S. California, which is a darned good thing because we had a WICKED winter storm rip through. Just love seeing photos of your greenhouse. Can you tell us what the large box covered with aluminum foil is?
Patty S.
We are getting another cold bast right around the middle of the month.
