Nikita Pineapple Guava

It looks relatively dense at the bottom half of height and then radiates branches with daylight between.

Are those upper branches thinned, or is that how it responded to pruning?

I have a clear idea of what I’m trying to ask, but finding it surprisingly difficult to articulate.

@murky
I received this plant as a grafted sapling in tree form. After a year or so I headed back the “trunk” at about 20 inches to force low scaffolds.

3 years ago and then again last year I topped the tree at about 5.5 feet. As you are aware, this Genus will sprout new branches at will anywhere along the trunk or previous lignified branches. Consequently, I have newer interior verticals that make up the density you’ve observed. Of course, the tree also sent up new verticals from the top shears, creating the sparser growth.

Overall the plant is more aggressive than I suspected. I remove suckers from the base twice per year. I’ve tried to maintain a 4 foot radius by thinning (removing offending shoots at the source) but two years in a row it is at 6 foot radius. It looks like my 5.5 foot high pruning spots will become upper scaffolds and the plant as a whole will mature into a shade tree.

They are much slower growing here.
There is a tree in my downtown that is over 20 years old but only 10-15 feet tall. I doubt it was ever pruned.
My largest tree is only 7 feet tall after 4 years in ground.

Mine are very slow growing, but I think it’s partially due to moving them after one year. My 2 new grafted trees are however growing relatively fast (kakariki and kaiteri) I expect them to overtake my 3 feet tall scraggly looking seedlings on year 3 or 4 in ground by the end of summer.

@ramv
I have previously grown CRFG cultivars in San Diego north county. They were slower growing and manageable as shrubs. This cultivar has exceeded expectations.

That all makes sense and answers clearly what I was interested in hearing to confirm my suppositions. Thank you.

Mine is much more tame in its location. I’ve been trying to stimulate it to grow more, which seems to be working. Perhaps if you tried malnutrition you’d get less growth too in spite of your better light and heat :wink:

2015/9/22.
Ripe fruit drop from 1st bloom. The tree is still loaded with immature fruit from the main bloom.

Excellent scaling object allows for interpolation of fruit size.

Nice sized fruits. My Kaiteris are about that size now But they get much larger. I think the Nikita tastes better though.

Today I harvested another gallon of fruits from the ground. From those, I kept about a half gallon’s worth of larger fruits. I scooped the pulp out of these and obtained this 1 cup of puree :slightly_smiling_face:.
