Good sun exposure is critical. Trees drop fruit when they are not capable of providing enough nutrition to them. My best guess is that this tree is not getting enough sun, hence the fruit drop and mediocre taste…
I agree that lots of sun is important !
I have many Prok trees here , most have good crops.
I have 3 in the middle of a small field maybe 300 ft wide.
Surrounded by larger forest trees .
These trees only get midday sun. No morning or evening sun.
These trees usually only have a few fruit.
By contrast , Prok , of the same age in larger fields with full , all day sun , have consistently had heavy crops .
That’s what I thought, too, sun exposure. However, the darn tree dropped hundreds of fruit yearly is crazy.
@RUenvsci - the sizes of your NG and JT-02 are opposite to mine. Mine NG is small. My JT-02 is bigger, like twice as big. I am sure my JT-02 is correct as it was from a reliable source. My NG is from Burnridge 8 years ago and looks to be correct.
@Ahmad - I think NG tasted fine but, to me, it is not as intense as Prok that my friend grows. This friend loves my NG and said it was “perfect”. He is a fruit connoisseur. He can describe various aspects of a piece of fruit he tasted. He likes my NG so much he planted a tree in his yard. Taste is subjective, indeed.
@mamuang yes, I stand corrected. I was confusing JT-02 with Kasandra. JT-02 hasn’t fruited for me yet. Kasandra is small.
So what if you’re in a zone that won’t take a graft like Chocolate or Coffeecake? Any other colder hardy male persimmons?
You do not need a male pollinator for Nikita’s gift.
I’ve been getting seedless fruit for 4 years now.
There is a climactic component to fruit crop I think. Out here it does not drop a lot of fruit after the first couple of years.
This year it dropped some fruit. But considering what I still have on the tree, it was the right amount of drop. My Jiro on the other hand holds all fruit and branches break badly.
NG has a decent amount of fruit each year, bears annually and fruit load does not break branches. I wish other persimmon varieties were as well behaved.
I pulled the trigger yesterday and bought a 3-5 ft. NG from Just Fruit and Exotics in FL. Should arrive the week of the 7th. Thx for the recommendation!
