Pakistan mulberry did not survive winter in Raleigh, NC

My white Pakistan aka green Australian aka Saharanpur survived many years until it was killed off last winter.
Black Pakistan is hardier but still gets some frost damage.

Alive and well, but no sign of fruit. Mine is on it’s own roots which takes some time to fruit.

An airlayer or rooted cutting of a mature tree would set fruit the following year. A seedling or TC could take quite a few years.

Interesting, I have one on its own roots and one that is grafted. The one on its own roots didn’t make fruit last year, maybe it is a TC? I could try planting the graft below the soil as others have suggested. Has anyone had rot issues doing this?

Planted the Pakistan below the graft on the northeast corner of my home. I also added a shade cloth to help mitigate the sun even more. So far it is still dormant even after a recent warm up.

As long as it doesn’t freeze tomorrow, looks like it has made it through the winter. Finally seeing some fruit too! The tree is young so I don’t expect a lot of fruit, but I’m hoping for a sample.
