You probably know that Paw Paws are pollenated by carrion flies. The aroma of the flowers is pretty awful.
Nice harvest Vincent. Curious, is there any fruit on our property that deer leave alone? I will have to rebuild the orchard fence to exclude them.
I will add some clover for them when I move up to our property so they have something nutritious. They will always have sanctuary there. I’ve never seen them eat apple fruit, just the tree. I’m hoping maybe figs will escape them?
The deer here in PNW will balance on hind legs to get at apples and rip off fig branches to eat leaves!
Good to know in advance. I have seen alot of the lower apple branches torn and hanging. I guess everything’s getting a dorky fence for awhile.
Are you up in the foothills here Christine? I ask because of your zone 7.
Guemes Island, near Anacortes. An island of vegetarians and too many deer!
Yes, they are side by side.
Some tall fruit trees be ok. It’s rented so we do not go there much.
Nice, I’ll be your neighbor soon on Shaw. I was just looking at a map which showed a few areas in zone 9a up there in the San Juans. Got to love those micro-climates.
They actually allow hunting for three months there which I understand but am not wild about. The deer are plentiful and I will fence what I care about.
That’s pretty amazing! Shaw is a beautiful island…nuns used to operate the ferry ramp when you arrived…totally picturesque! In spring and summer, there are roadside stands with self-serve vegetables and even frozen meat! It’s another world.
Climate wise, being inland or on the shore will make a difference in your
disease pressures. I’m a mile inland so it’s a fungal paradise. Those along the shore edges have less problem with scab and leaf curl.
Zone 9a?..interesting…is that on Orcas?
I think it must have been a quirky map that showed scattered spots of 9a throughout SJI. I can’t find the map now. Seems like it is usually 5+ degrees cooler up there but not always. It does seem like our traditional banana-belt (Sequim, Port Townsend, etc.) are called 9a.
Yes
They are a plague for anyone trying to grow fruit trees.
Plastic bags were enough to thwart the deer this year. They stripped leaves from the low-hanging branches, but only left saliva on the plastic bags. It was gross, but also kinda funny.
@Vincent_8B Tastewise, how does the giombo compare with saijo? Does one tree grow better than the other?
@tubig Saijo smaller fruit but quality a lot better than Giombo. But i am not sure because my Giombo was still in container at that time and fruit quality might different every year. Giombo very easy fruit on small tree and ripen faster than Saijo.
The single plum on my graft from your “Emerald Beaut” which is most likely Emerald Drop:
@Vincent_8B, I pre-ordered an Emerald Beaut plum this year (2023). After having it for several years, do you consider it to be worth it here in Western Washington? Has it been consistently ripening for you? I hope you are doing well my friend!
@SnacksFromPlants Hi Jason.
Depending where you order from. I ordered from Raintree nursery it came out Emerald drop Pluot?
So I am not sure what I got. Anyway my tree growing very vigorous. Some time having a couple branches with leaf curl disease but not bad.(it seems happen again the same branches every year so I had to prune them off) Ít took about 3 years or more to fruit. It had about 30 fruits or less on the big tree.(not much). The fruit quality are excellent. It’s ready to pick in late August every years. Very juicy strong sweetness flavorful fruit. Over all I think you should have it for your big property. Below are the pictures when it 2 years old and the fruits from last year.
