Persimmons 2021

This is its first year fruiting so I have no opinion yet. It’s astringent, and I’m going to see if it will soften on the tree before frost arrives. I see some Saijo and Picudo starting to turn yellowish. Jiro and Chinebuli appear to be turning yellow too.

These were picked up ready to eat from my potted second year Prok 09-29-21.
Sweet but not overly sweet and very fragrant . Also one 1/2" seed came out.

Those look beautiful. You could’ve fooled me into thinking they were Hachiya. My tree hasn’t fruited yet despite being 12 feet tall and flowering profusely this past spring.

My first H63a persimmon dropped today! It is still September and I have a ripe american persimmon!
I expect my other persimmons (kaki and hybrids) to ripen no earlier than mid November. So this is an early variety that is quite suitable for growing in cool summer climates like the pacific Northwest.

It also handled our blazing hot days in early summer without dropping any fruit. By contrast H-118/Early Jewel/Prairie Star dropped all (30+) fruit prematurely.
Tiny, only 24g! Like a persimmon berry.

I havent tasted it yet but expect it to be excellent.

My wife and I walk our country road (about a mile round trip) several times a week, normally in the evenings after work and dinner.

Yesterday evening… found our first piles of (coon ? possum ?) poop loaded with persimmon seeds.
They seem to prefer to poop in the road.

Sure sign that wild persimmons are ripening.

For some reason, one branch is producing persimmons that are super early. Others are maybe 15 days away. Maybe it is in an extra warm micro climate.

How do you know if persimmon can pollinate each other? Will a combination of either Fuyu, Giant Fuyu, and Izu pollinate each other?

Are both American and Japanese persimon tolerant of significant shade?

They like full sun. Maybe tolerant of a bit of shade. 6-8 hours is ideal. More is better.

None of my persimmons appear to be pollinated. None of the varieties you mention have male flowers. Chocolate is the most common male pollinator. Maru and Zenji Maru also produce male flowers.

Yes, but only a bit. I think I got about half a dozen last year, but this year I only count 3.

It was getting dark when I took the pics, so they may not be the highest quality. In this one, I’m holding a few Harrow Sweet pears, along with a Miss Kim.

But while I only have a few Miss Kim, I’ve got a bunch of other persimmons this year, most for the first time (H120 and Picundo had a few last year).

Being color-blind doesn’t ussually have a big impact, but telling green vs orange persimmons is a bit difficult for me. I showed my wife the pics and she said that all of these are still green.

I’ve never seen a PNW grown non-astringent with that flesh color or consistency. That does look incredible, and if not told it was Jiro, I’d have guessed it an astringent because of the jellied look.

The non-astringents, even store bought from California, or wherever, that I’ve seen that soft are more of a watery, stringy mess and not nearly so deeply orange. And the firm local ones are usually much paler inside.

Does this one have a touch of blossom end rot, or something that maybe sped its ripening?

I think there was a touch of what looks like blossom end rot. I see that on some other fruit too. That must have sped up ripening.
But the sweetness is there. It is nearly at saijo levels. I need to get a brix meter to test. I misplaced the one I bought a while ago.

Are those various kaki multigrafts? How long did it take for them to bear? My Picudo has a lot of fruit this year. I hope they’re good.

Here’s one more, Chienting. It was grafted in 2017 and this is the first fruit.

Yes, for the most part. The Miss Kim is the whole tree. Though it did start as a multi-graft. Kaki have the tendency to self-prune everything but what is at the top off. So, I lost 3-4 other varieties and was left with only Miss Kim.

Miss Kim was grafted in 2015 and first fruited last year.

H-120 was grafted in 2016 and has had fruit from 2019 on.

Nikita’s Gift was grafted in 2017. I’m not sure if there was fruit before that something ate or if it just dropped.

The following were grafted in 2019. Picudo is the only one which fruited last year.
