We are having a cold front coming to my neck of the woods to -15F this coming week. This will test out my Tam Kam X Chocolate that handled the cold of -16F last year. If it is survive another -15F then it wasn’t a fluke. A solid cold hardy Kaki for sure

@tonyOmahaz5 did your TK x Choc survive that temp above the snowline?

We’ve got -4 coming up this week. We’ll see if Nikita’s Gift survives that. I lost it a few years ago at -4.

It was -16F for a night last January without any snow and it survived. It is 4.5 feet tall now with thicker trunk. Hopefully it will survive this -15F then I know for sure it has a colder hardy gene.

Tony,
I just gotta say that for many years, I have thought that you are one bad ass orchardist to get the results you do in that cold climate.

I finally made it back and thank you so much for the fig cuttings, they are doing great.
Sorry for not being able to let you know sooner that I receive them, I just have gone through some difficult times.

I got this supposedly wild persimmon tree from a person in town. Is it big enough to graft onto yet, and can I graft 3 different varieties on the three branches, or should I do one? Also, how long until it is out of its winter dormancy?

I would only do 1graft on it now by cutting lower.

Agreed with @ramv , also persimmons are some of the latest trees to wake up. It will be late april, early may before it is awake to my guess

Nearly all my persimmons are already awake now!
I’ve heard they are late to wake up but its not true in my experience.

Oh wow, I’d guess yours are on Lotus rootstock? Out East they are all D Virginiana and they are adapted to wake up late to avoid late frosts.

That might partly be the case.
But my Missouri rootstock persimmons are all awake too.
The DVs are mostly asleep.
Hybrids are waking up.
Kakis are all awake. So maybe it is a kaki vs Virginiana thing?

My hybrids and kakis are asleep, and not close to waking up it seems. But they are all on DV. I think it is 100% dependent upon the rootstock.

That isn’t my experience. I think it is at least somewhat dependent on whether it is a virginiana shoot or kaki shoot or hybrid.
I have both DV and DL rootstock and kaki on top. They are all awake.
However hybrids are 50-50. Some awake, some asleep. I have a combination of Lotus and DV rootstock here.
DVs are mostly asleep. A

My three aren’t even close

Its probably also location dependent. We get a long season but very low summer temperatures. Our trees wake up early and sleep late.

I was of the impression that they wake up late too. I’ll need to check what mine are doing this year. But especially transplanted bare root seem real slow.

That is very true. But they get earlier with every passing year.

My kakis in East Texas (8b) are all still asleep, along with my jujus. Almost everything else has started to bud out, peaches, plums, apricots…

They are on DV
