Persimmons 2025

Don’t believe those reports. And temperature swings early or late in the season before they are fully dormant matters more anyway

I received some persimmon scion wood that has a lot of last year’s fruit stems and not many visible buds.

Does anyone know if you graft a piece of ‘blind’ persimmon scion wood, will it form new buds and grow?

I know you can do this with pawpaw, last year I grafted some pieces that only had flower buds. They eventually leafed out, it just took longer.

I’ve grafted D. kaki scions with last year’s pedicels still attached without any issue (i.e., the grafts took and the scions grew as well as any other scions). Since kakis flower and fruit on new wood and are prolific bearers, it’s not always easy to find year old wood without these pedicels (fruit stems). The buds can be small, but I think they’re usually visible. I think as long as you’re grafting year-old wood with at least one node, you should be fine.

Not a hybrid. It’s an astringent Kaki.

It is definitely not hardy to -40 F. It’s a normal Kaki, so roughly 0 to +5 F.

oh god thanks for posting this. i took pictures today and was going to ask if my pawpaw scion was useless as i only see flower buds and not even little vegetative tips poking anywhere:

I did a late collection of D. kaki scionwood this weekend. Anyone with experience, at this stage of bud development, will the scionwood last a couple of months in the fridge? The buds were starting to swell but not yet showing green.

They will take and grow beautifully.

Thanks @ramv. I want to make sure they are viable when I’m ready to graft them in a couple of months.

Well, I know they’ll take if you grafted right away. Not sure if they’ll last several months.

Not all kakis are created equal… My Zirochka appears to have done fine with - 9 F this year, and as you know Tony has seedlings doing great in Nebraska Z5.

But generally, kakis are about as hardy as a hardy fig.

Yeah, I know. That’s what I meant by “normal.” Normally = Generally.

My in-ground IKKJs are OK to ~ -3 F to -5 F. It nearly died at -7 F.

I’m optimistic (no proof yet) that my in-ground Giboshi and Sheng will be OK to ~ -5 F or lower. I guess I’m hoping with much less optimism that my in-ground Saijo is that hardy too.

We got down to 28ish last night and it was interesting to see what was affected. My Prok is the furthest along of all my persimmons, but there was no damage to any of the new shoots.

Interestingly I have a H-63a branch grafted into the Prok and most of those shoots, just a tough behind in growth, had obviously gotten zapped. Sorry it was pretty backlit, but I think the photos show the damage at the growing point of the shoots.

Since they were on the same tree it made it seem pretty obvious that Prok was more resistant to early freezes than H-63a. Just another thing to think about when it comes to overall hardiness.

Wow. We are not that far apart and I’m still looking at green buds. I had a bunch of other stuff get zapped.

Yes, down this way my one year old mulb grafts got zapped.

Everything else looks fine with no visible damage!

@disc4tw what does your Zirochka compares to?

I’m still waiting to sample it. My understanding is that the fruit is an early ripening PCA with higher brix and on the small to medium size for kakis.

Let us know more about it once you sampled for the first time and if comes seeded!
I’d be interested in a scion once you’re able to cut some wood, I’d be happy to pay for or a trade.

Any info on Autumn Apricot Hybrid and Crinkle Leaf Hybrid and Buzz’s Favorite from Buzz?
Still available if anyone wants:

edit: i have this info from another thread, do just need info on his hybrids.

“Buzz Favorite is probably an older unknown cultivar as it is in a grove of grafted persimmons alongside Josephine, Kitch, and Buhrman.”

We usually store our scion for about 2-3 month in7c fridge.

Blind bud will still grow new sprout but we do not recommended it.

Plumb and health look bud is preferable i. Grafte.

Buzz Favorite could be Garretson, Rice, Stratsburg or Golden Supreme. Unfortunately I don’t have info about it’s agronomic traits to guess what is it.

As always Chocolate is a flower making machine. Apologies to anyone within a mile or so of me who is wondering why their kaki persimmons are suddenly getting seeds…
