Persimmons 2026

Asian persimmons are in full bloom here. @armyofda12mnkeys Since you asked me for flower comparisons a while back:

California Maru female flowers

CA Maru male flowers

CA Maru “hermaphrodites”

Comparison of the three flower types. Both my CA Maru and Chocolate produce these three types of flowers. Males are typically in threes, females are solitary, hermaphrodites are solitary or in pairs.

Cross-section of the flowers. Sorry, didn’t realize this photo was so washed out. You should still be able to see that all three types have both stamens and an ovary, though the ovary is much reduced in the “true” male and hermaphrodite to a lesser extent and the female stamens are smaller and don’t shed pollen. For CA Maru at least, I think it’s more correct to characterize the “hermaphrodites” as an intermediate “less male” rather than something truly halfway between the two sexes. I’d be interested in seeing if the flowers from a true male kaki look the same as a male from a tree that produces females and males.
