Persimmons 2026

Great detective work.

That was a great observation Trev!

I was starting to think that we might have a dilema with some fake ones floating around just like the Dar Sofiyivky fiasco. (I hope not)

is there a ~10ft cultivar, that is not as lanky/droopy, with good looking leaves that typically dont break?

I’m thinking about putting one in the front yard

Inchon is smaller, attractive, has nice fall colors and is quite cold hardy.

I agree that Inchon is a smaller Asian persimmon with nice fall color, but it has long droopy branches. If you’re willing to do minimal pruning to keep your tree at 10ft, then I would recommend Giboshi (better fruit quality than Inchon - it doesn’t have the same red fall foliage, though still has attractive leaves). Or Great Wall is a much more upright grower and also has nice red fall foliage. Mine is still young, so I’m not sure how tall it uliltimately will get, but you could prune to keep the size in check.

Graft of Luotiantianshi appears to be breaking bud. It’s been ~6 weeks.

To maximize my chances of success, I grafted it to a Kaki. To minimize the risk of winter kill, I grafted it to a potted tree. If it grows well, I’l harvest more scions and take more risk.

Fingers crossed it grows well for you.

Im a big believer in making more grafts with single buds, hedge your bets with many grafts, but only if you feel good about the quality of the buds. I am used to using my own scion, but sometimes all you can get are smaller weaker buds, in that case using multiple buds makes more sense. Also putting single buds on large established rootstock can return dividends.

Usually I have enough wood that I can make multiple grafts with 2-3 buds each. So I do hedge my bets, if possible. In this case (LTTS), I had one small stick.

My assumption (!) is that a longer or thicker scion will carry more moisture and nutrients, so possibly have less risk of drying out and a higher likelihood of strong growth. But really I don’t know. Do think that’s wrong?

If I get growth from more than one bud on a scion, I’ll usually prune to one shoot to force early growth there.

I grafted a tanenashi onto American a few weeks back.

The buds started to swell a little over a week ago but they are staying this same size. Is that normal? How long did it take for yours to progress from the way mine look to the way yours look now?

No i wouldnt say that its wrong at all, just a preference really, if you have ample scion it doesn’t matter at all. If you have more rootstock than buds, you could do multiple grafts. I think grafts fail more often because of poor cambial contact/temp range issue, than just bad buds. If the cambium is not alligned it doesnt matter how many buds are on the scion, is how I look at it. Not wrong or right, just my perspective on it. Growth environment is s big factor too, id guess that things grow faster for a longer period of time at my location compared to yours.
