Persimmons budding out earlier each year

My persimmon trees have already started budding out this year. This is approximately the same time that plums and apples are starting to flower! We are technically still before our last frost date.

I thought persimmons were supposed to be much later than this. This is their second year in-ground.

Interesting, Ram.

Here were mine on 4/14/16. Nikita’s Gift. I didnt have the foresight to document when the bud swelling actually started, but those look a few weeks along, I think.

My Chocolate and Coffeecake trees have swelling buds but they dont count, having been planted just last month. I remember reading, don’t be alarmed if they dont break dormancy until Sept their first year.

Hmmmm.

Mine are early too this year. Last year was an early year and this year is a couple of weeks earlier.

I have buds swelling on a few kakis but my hybrids and Americans are still asleep. It’s weird they are blooming with plums and apples. What plums are you growing that are just now flowering in 8b?

I went out and checked my persimmons today. They have barely any bud swell, so far. Bet they start to swell soon!

We had a brutally cold winter that delayed my Asian plums by over 2 weeks. They suddenly are in full bloom after the last few days of sunshine.

Nikita’s gift is still fast asleep. But Saijo is budding out already and Rojo Brillante is showing green too.

Today I noticed all the Asian persimmons are budding out. H118 which just went through its first winter is my only American at this time. It is yet to show any signs of spring.

No bud swell on my persimmons here in NJ. We had a cold winter, and I noticed a lot of dieback on my two non-astringents and Saijo. We are still getting low temps below freezing.
