I have 2 apple trees in two neighbors’ yards that I am trying to ID. They are both prolific bearers of nice looking apples despite being neglected several years. One might be a red rebel and the other might be a paradise. I would like to be sure.
Is there a good phone app you have used to ID a fruit tree of an unknown variety? I would like such an app for identifying other trees too.
Thanks!
Frank, I’d say posting pictures and descriptions of ripening times etc here might point you in the right direction.
Thanks for your help in identifying this apple tree. I think it is amazing it can thrive without care here in middle Tennessee (except for wormy apples due to neglect). It is ripening now in August in zone 7a (south of Nashville, TN). The taste is unfortunately bland at this point, with a slight herbal, spicey taste (perhaps due to lack of proper minerals).
Someone with a plant ID app says it is a Paradise apple.
There are a few websites that have apple identification tools. This is the one that seems most helpful:
Identify your apple variety by comparing its identification characteristics
Here is a other:

If all else fails, there are some university extension programs that offer DNA testing
I didn’t want to duplicate a listing, so I will recycle this post from 4 years ago. Since technology advances rapidly, I thought I would ask a similar question.
Can anyone recommend a good tree or bush identification app for Android? I’m not very familiar with all the types of trees in my area, and I’m hoping to go on some walks in the woods or along creeks nearby to see what I can discover—especially if I can spot any fruit trees.
I understand these apps won’t give specifics like “World’s Best Mulberry,” but I’m just looking for something that could help me identify a tree or leaf as, say, “mulberry” or “plum” in general.
Is there an app you’ve used and would recommend?
Just FYI if people don’t know, google will search this stuff for you too. You don’t need the app either just switch to “desktop mode” in the web browser on the phone… or use a regular computer.
Some plants come right up with it better than plant apps, and some apps are better for specific fruit. So there really isn’t any “one tool”
Just click this button:
I like picturethis. plantnet is usually more wrong than picturethis. It can reasonably reliably tell you the difference between brambles and trees and things.
I like FloraIncognita
Google Lens… If it happens to not be available on a phone already:
Thank you to everyone who has responded. It seems like there is a wide variety of tools. This will motivate me to take a stroll sometime
naw not installing google stuff. but yea that is the app. Just using web browser
