Mulch at ground level should help, shade should help, Maybe if you are desperate, do the opposite of the Christmas light strategy in winter and hang some ice around it?
Thanks! I appreciate the advice and will implement that as tomorrow it is supposed to be well nigh 100. I was just thinking in a more theoretical kind of way though- would it make a difference?
Is it possible that my mockingbirds are protecting my orchard from squirrels this year? I literally see squirrels playing in my big trees near the house, but I have a mockingbird family that lives to the side and keeps other birds out of my orchard and side yard.
I haven’t had a squirrel problem in my orchard this year, which is very weird! All I can figure is that they are afraid of something. The mockingbirds?
An ex-neighbor,that I helped move to Payson,AZ last year, has a mosquito problem. He texted me and sent a few photographs.
There is a tree, that the earlier home owners let grow up through the deck and roof above.
He stated, that when it rains, apparently it does there(actually a regular monsoon in the Summer),the water runs down the trunk and makes a habitat for the insects below.
It looks like his attempts to divert the rainfall aren’t working too well.
My suggestion was to pour some kind of insecticide down the hole, which might happen.
An estimate to get the tree removed was done, although the shade is appreciated.
If there are any more ideas, they will be forwarded.Thanks.
Holy cow!
Oil or Mosquito Beaters in the puddle will kill the wrigglers.
I am interested in what you think about oil in the water to control mosquito larvae.
Could I use a vegetable oil?, Petro oil, and how much?
Speaking of mosquitoes, would love to have an inexpensive source of BTi to spray around my yard…
I think any oil would work. You only need a thin film. Plant oils could get rancid, I suppose, so a petroleum or mineral oil might be preferable. Maybe just a bit of dormant oil might be good, as I haven’t detected any smell in that. Depending how big the area is, I would think a teaspoonful or even less would be enough.
He might also try to plug the hole around the tree trunk at the roof with some of that aerosol styrofoam that comes in a can. That works well to fill in oddly-shaped openings.
I use mosquito bits or donuts in the rain barrels we use to water the garden. they go pretty far and aren’t that expensive
Oak apple galls are wasp nurseries. How weird is this!

Have not seen these yet. But I saw other types of wasp galls in NY and/or DE, can’t remember exactly…
I don’t think those are new. I remember seeing them when my brother and I would go play in the woods behind my grandpartent’s house as kids in southern MA. Maybe we saw some in CT as well, but I don’t remember for sure.
Here’s something else I noticed the other day on a persimmon tree…some sort of tent caterpillars. I noticed it Tuesday evening and immediately saturated it with some spray I had leftover from spraying apples/peaches/etc in a small 1 gal sprayer.
I took a picture a couple days later and nothing was moving anymore. Hopefully it was enough to kill all of them. I guess I should prune out the 3 affected branches.
started a to see them alot here in the last couple years. had them last year on my elders. sevin took care of them.
I let him know about your ideas and he bought Mosquito Beaters and sprayed foam, which helped.
I have some Garlic planted, but not sure when and know nothing about growing or harvesting the plant.Someone may have given me some at an exchange,a few years ago.
This is the first time flowering.Number one pic,is from about two weeks ago and the second is today. In the past years,I didn’t do anything.Does the thing get dug up now and is all of it useful? Thanks
they’re way past the harvesting window. dig them now and use right away or they will spoil. could pickle them to preserve them if theyre still good.
Dig it up now. Hang it in a shady spot to dry for a few weeks.
