I grafted Toka on a multi grafted plums tree with 15-16 varieties on it. My Toka bloomed profusely but barely set any fruit. Pls check these two threads. They were successful in finding cross pollination partners for Toka. I don’t have Toka now.
Rust on some varieties may only be cosmetic and won’t cause defoliation. On others though like Goldrush it can be fatal over a couple years of defoliation. Can you list your rusty varieties?
Superior or Black Ice are good choices.
id trade some black ice scions for toka next spring.
What do you think of black ice? It’s been kind of slow growing for me and I lost it’s first fruits this year. I can get you toka next year if you don’t find it. It’s one of my favorites.
unfortunately the 4 fruit it set rotted before fully ripening due to a extremely hot wet summer. couldn’t spray when i needed to. this summer’s been the opposite and alot of fruit has set so should be able to eat some this summer. have Canadian plum and brookcot apricot on it as well.
In KY/TN/AL, that would be a seedling of wild black cherry, P.serotina, 99.9% of the time.
Elsewhere, other native cherry species would be in contention
Anyone know why my fig hasn’t grown at all since I planted it? Then the leaves started falling off and turning yellow.
My guess would be that the location you selected for planting has poor drainage and your trees roots are being suffocated.
My tart Northstar cherry has been a machine putting out tons of fruit each year for 15 or so years. Last year there was quite a bit of insect damage to the fruit, but it still fruited heavily enough that I didn’t feel it was necessary to spray this spring.
This year it is very sparsely fruiting. I would be lucky to pick 2 quarts of fruit and most of it is so high up that I haven’t sampled any of it.
Is this a cause for concern or should the tree return to being productive in the future? Anyone know how long a Northstar remains productive?
I have had an issue with mealybugs attacking this plant and Carmine Jewel and Schizandra Berry. Could that be a cause?
I have heard that they do well in pots… Would you recommend that I dig it up and pot it? If so, what soil would be best for it? Right now it’s in sandy soil.
New Question: Neem Oil
I store it (100% Neem Oil) in the fridge (based on someone’s recommendation I read on this site). How do you get it out of the bottle once it’s congealed (narrow opening to the bottle)? I tried letting it come to room temperature for several hours, but it was still thick. I ended up using a knife, but once I use a significant amount, that won’t work. Advice welcome.
Sorry if this has been covered elsewhere, but I didn’t see it in the neem oil threads I skimmed.
Submerge your bottle in a hot water bath, let it sit for couple hours, shake well, and repeat hot water bath if necessary. Time highly depends on Neem oil volume you have in your bottle…1 gal requires much more time than 8 oz
Steve . . . I would love some Black Ice scions. If I remind you, when trading starts - would you please send me some? I have Toka and Methley. Methley does well for me here in VA. It was a very ‘clean’ plum, too. No rot. No insect damage. Very minimal spraying.
I have all kinds of nectarine and peach varieties, too. Most are grafts - so don’t know how much scion wood I could spare on those. Reliance peach might work for you in Maine. ? 'Have lots of that one - it’s a tree.
I think i still have some left over in the crisper drawer from this spring if you wanted to try chip budding. id try grafting Methley to it. have Canadian plum and brookcot apricot grafted to it. brookcot had 2 pink blooms but they didnt set. i have a reliance peach that set 1 peach this spring. had several blooms. anxious to try my 1st ever fresh peach!
I may have to get Reliance from someone next spring, I have one seedling rootstock that I need to graft after the Intrepid on it failed. I replaced the Intrepid with a tree on different rootstock. Reliance or any other cold hardy peach. My China Pearl and Contender have set peaches this year, their second year here. I also have Carolina Gold and Redhaven (and over 160 apple varieties and a bunch of pear).
Anyone know what this cracking, black-edged leaf damage may be from? It’s a young Asian pear that I pruned heavily because the root system was excessively root-pruned before I bought it. So it’s had a rough go of early life but was generally doing ok till a week or two ago.
That was kind of a lousy photo - here’s another. I’m also seeing similar black tinged edges and to a lesser degree the same ceacking on the leaves of all my pear trees, a Flemish Beauty, Anjou, and Summercrisp, though this Asian pear has it a lot worse than the rest.
