Sad news for Jujube growers

Majority of my 15 plus jujube trees died due to the low temp of -29F in Z5 Omaha from the polar Vortex on 2-16-21. Some of these jujube trees are over 10 years old. Only 2 large Honey Jar show a few tiny shoots right above the graft. I am very sad that they are gone because they were my most reliable production and low care trees. @jujubemulberry

I’m sorry to hear that, Tony. A moment of silence…

I hope your Honey Jar trees pull through.

Sorry. I did not know it was that cold.

Cliff England had some of his mother jujube trees died in May 2020 with the late frost. Some of those are 10+ years old large trees. Jujube is known to be winter hardy in general.

Sorry to hear that Tony. Jujube is quite resilient, many can sprout back from its roots. If yours are on its own roots, you might see have small tree grow back later in the summer

How did your Paw Paws do with those cold temps?

Sorry to hear about that. I have enjoyed and learned a lot from your posts, pictures and recommendation. I hope some rootstock or top is still viable and you can re graft.

No problem with the paw paws. The can handle the -29F just fine.

Sorry to hear about your loss. Those temps were so tough! I think I mounded dirt up around my HJ grafts maybe based on something you had said. And then I tried to pile up some snow too. It only protected the grafts, but I’m thankful for at least that.

your Title made me afraid I thought A new disease .
I do hope they grow from the roots (edit Sorry about the grafts miss read)

Appriciate the experiment of cold hardiness in cold places as I get Negative 20 sometimes too. thank you

(edit after 10 years you’d think the grafts would be mature enough
I hope The root stock can offer some solace!

Sorry to hear that, Tony.
-29 is a zone 4 temperature, and almost zone 3, so I guess we should not be surprised.
I hope the HJ’s make it.

So sorry to hear about your jujube trees Tony.
Hopefully your Honey Jar makes it.

It would be good to have the same in ground varieties on pots as a back up. Or at least the best ones!

aaw, that’s bad news. I’m sorry to hear that.

Did you store any scions in the fridge by any chance? maybe you can regraft on root suckers?

I cannot hit the “heart button” on this post. My heart goes out to you!!!

@tonyOmahaz5 ,
So sorry, Tony. You are a pioneer of many fruit in colder zones. What a loss.

Thats sad to hear!! Yeah jujube for me has been less hardy than the common fruits, perhaps the temp swings contribute, but here in kansas i loose a few young grafts etc and get small twig dieback almost every winter and most winters we dont get below 0F to -5 or so. The only trees that have not had any damage is Xu Zhou and Dae Sol Jo. Trees like Shanxi Li and Black Sea and So and chico young 4ft tall ± trees have been killed to the ground. Several times. My two yearling grafts of Russian5 froze right off in a mild winter and I thought they would be super hardy! Sometimes the burried graft saves me so i will bury graft from now on. And this past winter was -12 the coldest in 20 years, yet not that much damage, even my mimosa didnt freeze back it often does at 0 or -5, yet some of my new march 2020 additions Sugarcane didnt get damage but sihong right next to it did. I dont get this much damage on anything else i grow…(except figs of course, and the mimosa…). I’m at the point of thinking i would have just done more american and hybrid persimmons and not even got in to jujube if i knew this 4 or 5 years ago but im too deep in it now to quit with 30+ trees! I imagine once established they may gain a bit more endurance hopefully…

How did your JT-02 and Chuchupaka go? Did they survive?

Most of the young JT-02 are dead. Two large 7 years JT-02 resprout above the graft union. 7 years old Kassandra is dead. 10 years old Rossyanka is also dead. No hope for Hybrid persimmons at -29F. The last cold of -22F and they did alright. No problem with American persimmons Sad.

Aww man Tony I really especially hate to hear the persimmon damage!! Even jt-02? Wow!! Thats disappointing! Do you have any americans like prok?

I have a 12 years old multi grafted American persimmons with about 7 varieties and it is very productive.
