Just got my first Hawaii off of a one-year graft. Mine was entirely yellow, with some red coming from the lenticels. It had black rot, most likely from sun damage. Also had a bit of water core. The flavor is intense fruity, banana creme ( I usually don’t like banana flavors in apples, but this is vanilla and banana), pineapple and similar to a golden berry/ ground cherry. Some juicy fruit gum on the after taste. Super sweet, almost no acid. Texture is firm with thin skin and fairly dry. Overall great flavor to me. Hopefully I don’t have more issues with rot.
That’s a good description! I just had one of mine tonight and your description hit it right on the head. I moved it up on my list above when I re-did it, I have had several years of great samples off of it.
@JesusisLordandChrist I had that apple at some point but I never got any fruit from it.
I’ll give it a try and see what happens. Wont know unless I try and see.
No indar here. I cycle between Immunox and Captan. Aside from the leaf blotch it has worked fine. I’ll do a copper dormant spray in the late fall and late winter once everything has dropped.
There are still more GD children to consider. You can never have to much GD.
I’ve been quite impressed with Ambrosia (another GD offshoot). So far it’s been fairly trouble free and not bad tasting.
Anyone tried this GD offshoot?
I manage to have a lot of Golden/Yellow apples not related to GD or it’s GG parent.
Scott, are you still spraying with Merivon/ Luna Sensation, and what difference does it make with the rotters like Newtown Pippin?
Yes I’m still using those, but I’m not spraying after early June. The stone fruit rots I can control with that but for the apples I should do some later sprays if I want better control on the rots. This year things are not bad on the bug free apples but I had a ton of curc damage due to all the rains keeping me from getting a good Surround coat this spring. Usually I thin all those out but I left some with minor damage this year. Those damaged apples are much more prone to rot.
I used Merivon/ Captan on my muscardines and roses this year, as well as on my European plum. Much better control of Black Rot than with captan/ myclobutanil, which I tried last year. My apples are not bearing yet. Plum is still suffering from bacterial spot, but put on good growth this year and retained leaves well.
Fantastic real information, Thank-you Scott!!!
I have been updating various descriptions, I thought I would also tack them on here as nobody is going to notice if they are buried in the above.
Herefordshire Russet - I have not had many apples off of this tree, but the good ones are a very good yellow-fleshed russet-type apple. Very similar to Golden Russet in taste but with a complete russeting. It seems prone to rots and fireblight however.
This guy had a really bad fireblight strike a few years ago and I thought it was a goner but it came back. It’s probably not going to stay in my orchard but I’ll give it a few more years.
My Hunge’s are also coming in now, it’s a classic red-skinned (edited, not fleshed oops) apple in taste. There is no cheddar taste so far like there is some years. The skin looks odd as usual but they are absolutely bulletproof. This guy is the clear winner of the bulletproof apple contest, nothing beats it!
Stupid question- are the bulletproof apples sprayed on the same schedule as the rest and bulletproof within that context? Or, do you spray them less or coat with surround less?
They are bulletproof in my orchard, everything gets the same sprays. If I were to try no-spray apples I would start with that list, probably half would work OK. They still would get a lot of curculio, not much that can be done about that. The Codling moth seems more choosy, I don’t get much at all on the bulletproof ones.
Pretty cool. Hunge comes in mid to late August down here. Funny with the tastes on that apple. Winey here. Heard cheese and Strawberries elsewhere.
Is Hunge red fleshed OR just red fleshed tasting? Why I ask is I just planted a Hunge tree in my orchard last year.
No. Not red flesh. Off white to yellowish.
It has unusual blotching in the color, I think it’s cool looking but it’s not your standard apple. Here are some samples:
(Edited, I thought it was outside color not inside being asked about)
TY. I did not think it was a red fleshed variety. I saw it was red skinned but thought it was more of a yellowish or whitish fleshed variety.
Can you post a picture of one cut to see the flesh? I’m really interested in this apple.
Sorry I had a brain fart. Red skin not flesh. People talk about red fleshed apples so much that it burned into my brain I guess. The flesh is standard yellowish white.
