I just wrap mine with parafilm and stick them in a pot of a good soilless mix (ProMix BX). I don’t use a heating mat, but just put them in the basement, which stays 65ish this time of year.
Bottom heat may speed things up, but I usually get almost all of them taking. I would definitely leave the top off.
I am using pro mix hp as Naeem recommended above… but I tweaked mine a bit… 3 parts pro mix hp 1 part vermiculite.
Above Naeem recommended 75-79 temp.
The mellineal Gardner guy recommends 77 degrees… with my thermostat set on 77… my medium is staying in the 73 to 77 range.
I may bump mine up one more degree.
Hope to have enough roots in 4 to 6 weeks… to support bud and leaf growth…and will move them to my sunny south window then.
I still had a little moisture on the lid this morning and wiped that dry with a paper towel. I will adjust the gap in the lid until that stops.
Some people root fig cuttings meticulously with the expensive cuttings. I normally take the easy road.
If you do not wrap the cuttings, then some moisture condensation is ok. Wrapping and moisture condensation can be a fatal combination. It can cause the top rot, particularly if they are tip cuttings.
I have those 9 mostly tip cuttings out in my garden bed that have been hopefully rooting all winter… can’t wait to take the mulch off those and see if any took… may do that late March or early April.
They each had 3 or 4 buds under ground and 1 up top. I hope to be giving some figs away to family and friends this spring.
Just a FYI on the moisture inside the container. The first day or two with the lid on full… some moisture did accumulate on the lid and sides of the container.
Last night I left the lid on… but cracked open along the edge on one side of the lid about a half inch.
This morning the accumulated moisture had reduced some… but was still there… I wiped it off with a paper towell and put the lid back on with that half inch open on one side.
Checked it again just now and no more moisture accumulation yet. I reduced that crack to a quarter inch and may reduce it more… to mostly closed as long as moisture is not accumulating.
I see everyone is doing cuttings now! I have some going too. about 30 I will sell them on FB market place and give to my co workers. Hope everyone is doing well and their figs are growing and if not soon!!
Loaded with figs . First pic is bourjasotte gris, second in cdd blanc and third is Figo Preto. I counted over 25 figs on my 10 gallon bourjasotte gris!
I moved some containers out of garage. Those are the ones that I do not expect any breba. Still keep most other ones in garage. Also be ready to move them back in if night low goes to mid 20F.
So, everything I own, including tropicals, got moved outside yesterday, because my husband wanted the garage back. We had some discussions, and I think I convinced him tropicals have to go back. I think I’m going to leave figs and hardy palms, and just be aware of weather. Im guessing we are about done with the hard freezes, just hopefully frosts from here on out.
Next two week weather looking ok and I will be moving my figs out on the weekend. Just remember if you have a new growth on figs and weather go below freezing will get damage.
