Site Upgrade Happened

I need to do a major upgrade to shift us to a new (virtual) computer with the latest software on it. Hopefully it will all go smoothly and we will only be down for an hour or less. I’ll put up a banner message ten minutes or so before we go down.

Since it’s a new computer the new location needs to propagate and sometimes that takes awhile. If its been several hours and its not working, new.growingfruit.org may work as a temporary way to access the site (ignore the security warning).

OK we are back up! Please report any glitches or issues on this thread. Various new features have been added, one I see right off is the “heart” of a post now allows other emojis, similar to what other sites are now allowing.

Search function seems to be down.

Site seems to be a bit slow load pages, and searches seem to take longer too. Don’t know if it’s on my end or not, tho.

upgrade banner is still up.

I can connect on T-Mobile, but not on wired Verizon. Not sure if it’s a problem on my end or not.

Thank you for creating and managing this awesome site!

Glad to hear it’s mostly working. There was a database migration and the site has to re-build a bunch of things in the background after a migration, thats why the search might not have worked and various other glitches might have occurred. It should be fast once all the migration jobs are done.

That usually means that Verizon is not properly updating their DNS (DNS is the phone book for the Internet). It should eventually update. I have Verizon and it works for me on their network.

Oh I tried to use a reaction besides  and it didn’t work.. it looks like that feature has to be explicitly enabled. If we enable it it is similar to how Facebook and phone texts work, there are a list of reactions that can be picked besides heart. Opinions on whether to enable it are appreciated! Personally it seems both positive and negative for me, I like the simplicity of hearts but sometimes other reactions are more appropriate, e.g. if something is funny you can laugh.

Here is a poll for it:

  • Yes enable reactions to posts besides
  • No don’t enable reactions to posts besides

It will not let me log in on my laptop last night or this morning. I get a banner telling me to downgrade my browsers to something that allows for more spyware. Funny thing is that two of the browsers it recommends also give me the same issue.

As it works on my little Chromebook (same browsers), I will run diagnostics on my laptop to make sure nothing is sideways in it. I did let it “run out of gas” twice in the last week, so it’s possible.

A quick surf on the Chromebook did not expose any glitches in my basic usage pattern now that I’m in.

You might have some virus infection on that computer? Asking to install a spyware browser sounds like what a virus would do. Put up a screenshot if it doesn’t get fixed.

It does not like browsers that are not the mainstream variety. Also wants the latest updates on the browser you are using. I had chrome update restricted and it wanted the latest updates in order to work properly.

Thanks for the site and the time you put in to maintain it.

Hmm. I am running Duck Duck Go and Brave on Android mobile but didn’t get the same alert that you did.

I am with Richard in that I’m getting the upgrade alert banner in both of those ^^ mobile browsers.

Scott, I went to reply to @Mtncj and discovered that when I accidentally backspaced into the quote body I was able to insert a statement that wasn’t part of what they had written. I took a screenshot before editing it back to being verbatim. Hopefully it will resolve itself.

i thought you always could do that

Hmm. I disabled it but I think it didn’t stick. So I both disabled it and deleted the post. Let me know if you still see it.

There is a new “WSYWIG” editor and it looks like it has that behavior. Click on the M-downarrow thing in the upper left of the edit window to go back to the old editing mode.

Oh the poll looks to be 2:1 in favor of allowing multiple reactions so I enabled that just now. It seems to be slowing things down a bit now.. hopefully not for long.

It popped right up for me on Firefox, where I run strong anti-spyware and ad blockers.
