Pearl looks amazing!
This is my first year having all three plus Royale ripening together, and I’m excited to finally compare them! It’s been very hot and dry here recently, which I think is why Lite is shaping up so nicely this year. And I agree with what you said about these nectarines needing lots of heat. Any rain at this point will likely cause some serious cracking and spoilage, so fingers crossed for continued dry weather. I’ll be posting updates on the others as they ripen over the coming weeks.
Lots to harvest at the orchard this weekend.
First up is a seedling of Verry Cherry Plum. It wasn’t fully ripe. But it was the only fruit on a young tree, and I didn’t want to lose it. Tasted a lot like its parent. But smaller. And the tree has bad black knot. I’ve got about ten other seedling Verry Cherry Plum trees. But this is the only one to fruit so far.
Starting to get a few figs from my potted plants.
This Hakuto seedling is different than the first four. Larger fruit and freestone! Flavor is very similar to Hakuto.
I have this labeled as Flavor Queen. I don’t know, though. It seems way redder than it should. Whatever it is, it tasted very good.
Picked a few to see how ripe they are. Not ripe at all, apparently.
Great harvesting time, @SMC_zone6. Interesting varieties you have.
I am glad I have another full-size refrigerator this year.
I’ve been dehydrating a bunch. I’ve also been giving away a few boxes to co-workers each week. The problem is that then everyone feels obligated to bring me in some sort of baked good they make. Which is really nice, but I’ve got too many baked goods as is!
I dehydrated nectarines last year. They tasted good and the texture was quite chewy. I wonder eating a bunch of concentrated sugar like that during winter months may have contributed to my rising A1c level!!
I probably will freeze them, more than dehydrate them.
Lots of peaches, nectarines, and plums this weekend. Here are some highlights.
Toka (aka Bubblegum Plum) has been ripening nicely this year. I like these in small quantities. They’re tasty, but super intense in kind of an artificially sweet sort of way.
A good peach that I’ve always found to be fairly disease prone. But I’ve given in and spray all my stuff anyway, so I guess that doesn’t matter.
Hiney Kist has been a wasp favorite this year. The ones I’ve gotten have been very good. Not quite as good as Honey Lite, but very good.
This seedling is giving me some of the best peaches out of all my peaches this year. It’s also the only orange fleshed Hakuto seedling I’ve had so far. I’m pretty excited about this one.
Midweek at the orchard. Early apples, peaches, and nectarines.
Pipsqueak is great. Excellent russet flavor without any of the weird notes of pear that some russets have.
Ivan is a good early season crab. It’s crisp and has a simple flavor. It’s kind of like chewing sugarcane.
This is my first year fruiting RisingStar, and it’s very good. Classic peach flavor through and through.
I’m having to pick Honey Blaze early because wasps have chosen this as their favorite tree. The one that I tasted had lots of promise. I doubt the wasps will leave me many more, so I’ll let some ripen on the counter and see how they do.
Chipmunk in a persimmon tree.
Nice haul.
Hate it when even a chipmunk could ruin fruit on the tree. I used to think that they did damage only at the ground level until I saw one up high on my jujube trees.
What phenomenal photos! Thank you for sharing them and your thoughts about each fruit!
Long weekend, lots of fruit.
Broken Heart was excellent this year. It’s a bud sport of Elephant Heart that’s got the same flavor but a different look.
Excellent little nectarines
Hakuto is always one of my best fruits. This year, there was a little bitterness in the skin. But I’m thinking that was because of the drought. Still awesome.
Late Muscatelle is good and kind of strange. There’s a little bit of a grape or lychee flavor to it. But it’s hard to describe. I wish is wasn’t such a shy bearer because I only got a few this year.
Winblo is steady and excellent. Just a really great peach with a little bit of vanilla flavor.
Great looking fruit my friend! Could it get any better for us?
Where did you get the Hakuto trees from? I have been looking everywhere. My wife dreams of having one of these in our yard
I did not know that Winblo is this late. Do you have a brown rot issue on peaches/nectarines at this time of the year? I have found that I got more brown rot after the last heavy rain.
The Arboreum Company. As far as I know, they’re the only ones who ever listed it.
It’s later than usual this year for some reason. Last year I was picking them in early August.
No brown rot at the moment. But that last rain somehow managed to miss me, and my orchard is dry, dry, dry. Fingers crossed for a thundershower this week.
Thank you. I looked for the Arboreum Company website on the net so i can order one. But cant seem to find it. Do you have a website, contact number, or email address?
Thanks again!
The Arboreum Company closed their business, not too long ago.
I was out of town for a few days (@mamuang, I heard we got a lot of rain!). Here’s a little of what I came back to.
Shenshu is an all around good apple. Sweet, easy to grow, early.
July Prince is one of my best yellow peaches. It wasn’t as excellent this year, but that’s because I didn’t thin it well.
Big and delicious. The mango of nectarines.
I’ve got a section of mixed hazelberts on the perimeter of my orchard. They’re tasty but kind of small, and most years the wildlife gets them before I do.
We got soaked. Windy and drenching rain. Fortunately, not a tornado.
How come your July Prince ripen in Sept? I look for early, tasty peaches. Any suggestion?
That Honey Royale nectarine looked good.
Is this the pearl plum from Trees of Antiquity by any chance? (I hope so because I reserved one for spring shipment).
Your photos are absolutely gorgeous, by the way. Looking at them makes me want to buy all your fruit!
