SMC's 2025 Orchard Season: A Year in Pictures

Mine came from Arboreum Co., but hopefully they’re the same!

Stopped by the orchard today. Apples are picking up as stone fruit is winding down.

Rubinette tops a bunch of people’s best apples list. It’s easy to see why.

Maybe not quite ripe yet. Still very good though. And the numbers keep dwindling on the tree as squirrels and wasps get them.

Satsuma is the steady eddy of the plum world. Super juicy and tasty.

Some things from the weekend.

And the first pawpaw of 2025 is… Overleese! It tasted great.

Sugar Cane is sweet and crisp. Who knew?!

I’ve got a full Marcona tree and it only gave me a handful of almonds. I guess it’s just not all that happy in the northeast.

Sugar Giant is a big tasty white peach. You have to wait until they’re nice and ripe though, otherwise they have a weird texture.

Do you ever sell your hakuto seeds? I see nowhere online to source trees at the present, so I’d be happy to try some offspring.

Trying to keep up with posting pictures as I go.

Cherry Cox was good.

Pixie Crunch was good.

Canadian Strawberry was excellent.

Friandise is becoming one of my favorites.

Kidd’s Orange Red was great, and has been a favorite of people I’ve shared it with.

Please continue doing this. I look forward each year to seeing your excellent (of top notch professional quality) presentations.

Thanks! I wish I had time to write more detailed descriptions. But I figure the photos at least are a good reference to have out there.

Lots o apples

Reine des Reinettes is good.

Sweet 16 is very good.

September Wonder is fine.

Otterson is not good (for fresh eating) but beautiful, and larger than I thought it would be.

Golden Nugget is super good. A top apple this year.

Not very high praise. I’ve been after that, is it not as good as the original?

It tastes the same as the original. But Fuji apples taste fine from the store. So, I don’t think it’s all that necessary to grow it when there are so many other varieties that stores do t have available.

Fameuse is okay.

Frostbite is excellent.

Fireside is surprisingly top notch, and huge!

Apricot is either mislabeled from Maple Vally Orchards or their website description is wrong.

Carter’s Blue is an apple I always want to like more because of how beautiful it looks, but flavor/texture is always just okay.

I’m with you; I love my fireside tree. Never fails to produce hundreds of delicious and crisp apples!

Peaches are winding down.

Selena was good, but probably would’ve been a lot better if I’d thinned it more

This one’s a cross between a honey peach and a red flesh peach. It’s solidly good. But the breeding project needs more work.

Athena is a great honey peach.

Wasps and bees getting their end-of-summer fill.

Rubinette makes the richest cider! It is very thick and rich. I have to water it down with other apples its so rich.

I haven’t tried Rubinette in cider yet, but I’ll keep that in mind. Also, @clarkinks, I’m getting close to posting pictures of my pear harvest. Don’t be disappointed in the lack of varieties I’m growing, I grafted a bunch more this past spring.

Have not been disappointed in your posts yet. I doubt that will change, you do a great job!

Glad to see your pix of Carter’s blue, which I was thinking of getting just for the appearance alone!

I think that is Apricot (calyx is an outie) just picked a month too early.

It certainly does have a distinct calyx. The MV website says it’s ripe in September. But you’re probably right that it needs a few more weeks. I’ll have to check the branch to see if I’ve got any more. It’s a young graft.

You’re north of me and they’re not ripe here yet. I would guess Oct 15? I think pomiferous (in the text, not in the harvest chart) says October, too
