SMC's 2025 Orchard Season: A Year in Pictures

Another round of apples.

Wickson is excellent, but I look forward to its sibling Muscat de Venus more.

Cordera is very good in a traditional apple-y way.

I picked St. Johnsbury too soon. I’ll keep some in the fridge to see how they ripen up.

Auvil is fine, same as September Wonder.

Cornish Aromatic is okay, but nothing special, and doesn’t have the best texture.

I adore Muscat de Venus. It has so much aroma and flavor for such a tiny apple.

Not the best year for pawpaws given the lack of rain we’ve had the past month. But Honeydew ripened up very nicely and surprised me with really nice flavor. A somewhat mild pawpaw that tasted smooth.

PA Golden #3 is okay this year. Nothing special.

Some red fleshed apples.

Niedzwetzkyana was very red this year, but not so tasty.

Christmas Pink was a little pink, and sort of tasty. But it probably could’ve ripened more.

Cherry Crush had no red flesh but tasted great.

Pink Lemonade had just the smallest bit of pink flesh, but it was excellent.

I’m happy to hear cherry crush tasted great, as I grafted some this spring. Gorgeous apple photos!

A few red-fleshed peaches to show the coloring.

Mighty tasty Harrow Sweet.

This Quarteira Velha wasn’t as ripe as it could have been. But at it’s best, this is a big fig with nice flavor, though not super intense.

Bozhy Dar is getting close to ripening.

Dar Sofiy (the thin leafed version) is not all that close to ripening.

I love Harrow Sweet. My tree is wasting away in a shady spot. If I were to grow only one Euro pear, it’s Harrow Sweet. I don’t need to be concerned about refrigeration before eating.

I like Cherub. It’s weird in texture and a little weird in flavor, but tasty.

Hard Candy Cider is like gnawing on fruity wood.

Hoople’s is excellent.

I can see why Franklin is highly regarded for cider. Sugary and puckery.

Harrison is woody and kind of soapy tasting, which I guess makes sense for a cider apple.

Your descriptions make me laugh. Love them!

I’ve never had soapy cider, but I’ve had a lot of ropey cider over my years.

Mostly russets.

Ashmead’s is excellent.

Windham is also excellent, though not as excellent as Ashmead’s.

D’Arcy Spice is not at all excellent.

SunCrisp needs to mellow in the fridge a bit.

Christmas Pink is pinkening up!

Grafted SunCrisp this year myself. Is it not a good fresh eating apple?

It certainly is a beautiful looking apple.

Your Sun Crisp must have gotten full sun. Mine have never gotten that much red specks.

I am not Stephen but have grown SunnCrisp for several years. My SunCrisp is one of my top apples ever year. I enjoy Sun Crisp off the tree but don’t enjoy Gold Rush off the tree.

It’s good for fresh eating. But it’s got a spiciness that smooths into something like a butterscotch flavor if it sits in the fridge for a bit. Plus I think the texture improves.

Full sun on a dwarf tree that doesn’t have a lot of leaves. It’s swimming in sunshine.

Still lots of apples.

Rhode Island Greening is has been going into pies and crisps.

Keepsake is excellent, but gets a weird waxy/greasy thing with it’s skin.

Muscat de Venus is one of my favorites.

WineCrisp is a super easy to grow, disease/pest resistant apple that tastes very apple-y. Super dense too.

I’m not sure what I think of Black Limbertwig.

How do you like your D’arcy spice? I had one that died before fruiting and I almost bought some more scion, but I saw somewhere that it’s the same as Cinnamon Spice, which I still have.

Oops, never mind. I see you wrote it wasn’t excellent. I guess I was too busy looking at your nice photos to read.

My tree has always been a little sickly too. Maybe that’s why the fruit isn’t so great. It’s just not as flavorful as other russets. And it’s kind of dry. If I had the fridge space, I’d let it sit around for a few months to see if that improved the quality.

'Simmon season

Incon is a truly cold hardy kaki that’s got excellent flavor.

Prok is always a winner.

Bozhy Dar was super impressive. I’ve got a few more on the tree that I’m letting ripen more fully… and really hoping the wildlife doesn’t steal.

100-46 is consistently great.

… and here’s an owl in a persimmon tree. It was camera shy, so didn’t let me get a clear picture.
