I planted an oblinaja plum this spring, my kids really like the cherry plums from trader joes. From what ive read those are some kind of proprietary variety, what are some varieties that are close though that i could graft to the obi in the spring? Theyre meaty and very sweet with a mild sweet cherry flavor. Need to be zone 5 hardy. Thanks!
Disambiguation. Cherry plum can mean:
- cherry-size plums
- cultivars of a plum species native to North Central USA
- Pluerries
And cerasifera…
If Trader Joes is selling them, and somebody wants more, I thinking its an interspecific like one of the Zaigers.
The closest match would be the Pluerries. For example One Green World has Sweet Treat Pluerry and Flavor Punch Plum Cherry listed as zone 5 Pluerries Interspecific Hybrid Fruit Trees - One Green World
You’ll definitely want a Zaiger-bred plum-cherry hybrid, but most are only marginal for zone 5. I would also check if others nearby have had long-term sucess with the cultivar you choose. Another option could be to graft it on as a branch of a hardier tree.
Sweet Treat maybe…
I am in Z6a (Connecticut), Candy Heart Pluerry and Flavor Punch both are doing very well with the winters. Both are very sweet and tasty. I like the former more, I can taste cherry notes in some of the crop, but the latter is more productive. They ripen in Sep and Oct respectively.
Okay, they have a marketing page. They say Zaiger developed it specifically for them, so nobody is getting their hands on it any time soon.
BTW, I got some and they are very good compared to everything else at the grocery stores. Our local Kroger store also had them
I’m about done with Flavor Punch harvest for this year. Second year of heavy production. It’s an okay fruit, nothing special. It is a lot bigger than a cherry and very much a plum.
I’ve got about ten seedlings of Trader Joe’s Very Cherry Plums that are in their third leaf. They’ve survived the winters just fine, but they’re noticeably slow growing. As for what’s currently available to home growers, I think your choices are: Nadia, Candy Heart, Sweet Treat, Flavor Punch, Delight, and Sprite.
Im eating these now… going to save some seed.

CherriYum
I did a search on the forum and it seems nobody has mentioned them yet.
The way this author desribes them they are similar to Verry Cherry Plums. (maybe the same)?
Had this exact question. I tried them earlier this year from hmart and really liked them and was wondering if anyone had any idea what variety they were as i explore pluerry to replace my cherries (which im starting to suspect wont grow well in my climate but im still giving a try lol
This is almost a year old, but I believe Delight and Sprite have no cherry genes. The cherry plum in their parentage is plum.
