Spectracide Malathion vs Sevin for PC

For those that have tried both which do you believe is more effective on PC? Not quite ready to step up to $300 a jug or spraying mud. If you have another that is commonly found that works better list it.

Note that over the counter Sevin is no longer the formula of prior decades.

The current Sevin uses zeta cypermethrin instead of carbaryl. I’ve used it and switched to other products - Imidan and Actara. I had breakthough with Sevin.

The fruit was still edible (although my neighbor wouldn’t eat the fruit off her tree that I sprayed) as it was only surface damage. It might have been that I needed another spray rapidly after the first spray. Like 3-4 days. idk. PC is hard to kill.

Sevin is available essentially everywhere and it’s cheap so it has that going for it.

MSU does not list malathion on their PC spray list so it’s either not labelled for PC or doesn’t work. I have never used it.

Here are a couple of threads that I’ve contributed to, and there may be more.

I seem to suffer a lot of curculio damage when I don’t spray specifically for them while fruit is sizing up, but I don’t believe you need to use a persistent insecticide although you could. This opinion is controversial. I like Pyganic, but it’s expensive. Here’s yet another pyrethrin compound:

Pick the first warm evening after petal fall and spray after the bees have gone to bed when the curculios are walking about.

I think my main pest is OFM and after my first few years of no fruit, I tried Triazicide.
Per a members “suggestion” I increase the concentration a bit.

I went from almost no fruit to almost no bug damage. It’s not easy working around the rain.

I start at petal fall,. be careful to understand what that means. There may be a few petals still on the tree, but are the bees gone? So to me I’ll walk through the trees and note the declining bee activity and let that set my petal fall. Also, some peach blooms have the bud/bloom cover/husk? as dark red and from 20 ft away looks like bloom petals. get your face in your trees

I consider my spray effective for 10 days. Two weeks if really dry. In Indiana we are lucky to get 7 days between rains and I reapply.

I have kept records of all my sprays over the last 5 years. If you have to ask, when was it I last sprayed? It’s likely later than you think.

Final thought, to me the last spray is almost as important as the first spray. the first spray after petal fall is to get a head of the bugs to hopefully get fruit this year. the last spray should be timed so the chemicals are clearly no longer dangerous to eat the fruit. Triarizide states 2 weeks before harvest is the last spray. I shoot for 3-4 weeks of no spray before harvest.
