A few apple varieties with either strawberry in the name or a distinct strawberry flavor grown at our Hocking Hills Orchard.
Red Devil – England, 1975. Medium to large sized fruit ripen mid season. Scarlet flushed skin with pronounced bloom on skin. Discovery x Kent cross, strong fruity taste, strawberry flavor, crisp, juicy, pink stained flesh, one of my favorites. Hugh Ermen developed variety.
Canadian Strawberry – Maine, early 1900’s. Medium to large fruit that is buttery yellow with some green beneath, overspread about 50% with a veil of stripes and spots of vibrant red-orange. The flesh is surprisingly juicy, distinctly tart and full-flavored. Ripens in early fall and keeps for about a month.
Chenango Strawberry – New York, 1850. Excellent for both fresh eating and cooking. The fruit should be picked when the skin begins to develop a milky appearance. Medium sized fruit is quite elongated in appearance with smooth yellowish-white skin nearly covered with stripes of red and crimson. Tender white flesh is juicy, aromatic and highly flavored
Devonshire Quarrenden – Normandy, 1678. One of the best early apples, with medium fruit of stunning deep red. Fruit has a strawberry flavor and are sweet, juicy and crisp. Always a reliable bearer.
Erdbeerapfel aus St. Salvator – Germany, 1800’s. Strawberry apple from St. Salvator.
