The Nectarcot

After many years of trying to create a nectarine x apricot hybrid wich resulted in failures and disappointing results, I’m happy to introduce you: the Nectarcot, a nectarine x apricot hybrid.

Seed parent: Hardired Nectarine.

Pollen parent: F1 Moorpark apricot.

What I mean about “disappointing results” is my old post which I mentioned a nectarcot, which I described it as a nectarine x apricot hybrid, but it wasn’t. It just turned out to be a standard nectarine.

These are the tagged branches from where I pollinated the Nectarine flowers. At the end, I end up with about 20 fruit with viable kernels. One kernel produced a standard nectarine, one nectarcot, and I’m waiting for two kernels that are about two germinate.

Nectarine seedling.

Interesting, but don’t completely judge a fruit by the leaves. You may get something totally new that doesn’t follow the rules.

True.

This tree is grown in South Africa, it resembles a nectarine tree, but it’s a nectarine x apricot hybrid.

What does it taste like?

From a different instagram post, it’s described to have, “the texture of a nectarine and the flavor of both.”

Thank you, Richard.

My next goal is to create a sweet cherry x plum hybrid and then cross it with my nectarcot. I’m just curious to see what the leaves and fruit would look like.

Here it is again. It’s hard to see from the pictures, but up close, the leaves look like if I glued the end tips of apricot leaves with peach leaves.

Here its standard nectarine sibling for comparison:

The last two siblings have germinated. It’s too early to determine whether they are hybrids or just standard nectarines.

Are you doing foliar feeding or anything else for Xtra care? :crossed_fingers: Hoping for more hybrids!

No foliar feeding at this time. I don’t want to risk a fertilizer burn.

I have it in my room under my aquarium light. I don’t want to risk the birds eating the leaves. That happened to my peach x almond x plum hybrid, but fortunately, it recovered.

Here it is again. Looks like the leaves are taking a bit to fully open.

Good luck with your project. My Moorpark apricot ripened 6 fruits for the first time.
