The price of fruit trees is too expensive

What trees are available? I think, I tried here and when trying to order the tree’s were sold out. Are you getting different outcomes?
Does anyone know where you can still order fruit trees for spring planting? I want to order enough to get wholesale price

Are you talking about Adams county nursery? I saw trees were for sale last summer. Maybe around July or August? Some places sell way ahead of time and sell out extremely fast. Raintree sells 4 in 1 pluots and starts their sells in July. They sold out of 4 in 1 pluots of each the regular and zee sweet the first week. Cummins opens sells for the next year so early you would not believe it. I think I had a order for a Nadia cherry plum in during April or May that should be shipped June of next year. I have a personalized grafting of rogue red that will be shipped out in 2024 or 2 years out with cummins because you have to put in a order in during July for 2 years out with specialized grafting orders.

That’s what I’m learning. You have to order a year or longer in advance. When I lived in New Jersey, I bought nice fruit trees from a Amish family in Pennsylvania. I can’t remember there name. Does anyone know of someone that sells fruit trees for southeast, zone 8a…in Virginia.

Are you talking to buy by picking up locally or buying fruit trees that are shipped to you?

I was checking out their persimmon until I noticed they are grafted on lotus.

I’ve not made any purchases from Cumberland Valley. But, there are some good deals to be had in central Tennessee in nursery stock.

Good you found that out. I typically figure most things live in zone 6 though.
I procrastinated and one tree they have I looked at is sold out.

Vintage Virginia Apples, which also sells pears, plums, and cherries, comes to mind. They’ll start selling for the spring in about three weeks, and they do offer volume discounts.

David Vernon’s Century Farm Orchards in NC is another excellent option, and he’s already taking orders for spring. He also takes custom grafting orders for his many obscure varieties, but (of course) you’ll have to wait a bit for those.

I just emailed ACN and asked if they were taking orders. A bunch of stuff was sold out, but they also had a couple things not listed on the site (yet?). A lot of the asian pears were sold out, but had Juicy Jewel and Reddy Robin (I’ve seen the latter on Raintree too, haven’t seen the former anywhere else). They’re both hybrids that can get a pretty red blush and are not particularly russetted. Unless the seller specifically says not to I’d just email and ask. It was my first year planting fruit trees and I was surprised to learn they’re basically all sold out around the time when you want to plant them.

Nectarines are my sister’s favorite fruit. I’d love to grow some for her, but I have not heard of any varieties that have had great success here in KS. I admit I haven’t done searches in the forum yet, but I seem to recall reading they will be harder to grow than peaches and have a higher insect pressure (although that’s hard to imagine as peaches were a nightmare for me this year).

If peaches were a nightmare, nectarines probably aren’t worth the effort. I can’t grow them here without a greenhouse. Outside it’s birds, coons, and stink bugs. It’s hard growing peaches outdoors here even in a dry year.

The coons were really bad this year. I’ll need a better plan for next year. The bugs were bad too, but not more than usual. Between the weather (lots of wind and rain) and my absence due to work, I was late getting my 2nd spray down. The results were not pretty. Tons of PC damage - probably 80-90% damaged across all varities.

Sorry you had a bad crop year. Hardly anything got pollinated here in KY, except some I played the bee and hand crossed just a dozen or so. Too cool during bloom time. Has also been a cool fall.

Planting apple seeds and grafting to them in a couple years is one method of getting cheap trees.

I kind of started my own stooling beds for rootstock that had failed scions in 2021. I plan to keep that going for low budget apples into the future.

From what I have read nectarines are bothered by certain insects that peaches do not because the fuzz on the peach makes certain bugs not target them. I believe they are thrips but I forget. While I have not had too many issues with stonefruit like a cherry, peach plum or nectarine I have heard many struggle with them. I am lucky where I live in a warm dry area. My issues with stonefruit have been late frost. This was the first year my cherries and peaches bloomed but they got frozen off. No shortage of things like apples or pears in our neighborhood though.

Looking at some nursery sites for 2023 season. I have noticed some prices are even higher. I wish I could remember the nursery sites but a few were $85 for one bare root tree. I even see Stark Bros prices are getting higher than the 2022 season. Their " organic" tree prices are $$$$$.

There are still websites that are affordable for bare root. One Green World, Bay Laurel Nursery, Trees Of Antiquity and Burnt Ridge are still affordable. Some places like Raintree Nursery have really increased their prices from the start of the year though. In July I bought both kinds of 4 in 1 pluots at the 65 dollar price amount it was back then and it was the first week of sale so I got them at more around the 60 dollar range. They now sell for 110 dollars last I checked. Issue is some things you have to get from more expensive nursery like Raintree if you want them. Zee sweet pluots are only for sale online at Bay Laurel nursery and Raintree, the 4 in 1 Mirabelle plums are only for sale at Raintree as far as I know and the there are others items that are the same way like there is a nectarine that is supposed to resemble the blood peach only sold by Raintree and Raintree is one of the few nursery that sell Gisela 3 rootstock cherry trees or St Julian rootstock with their peaches and plums. All of these exclusive trees and rootstock allow them to charge a premium at Raintree or other expensive nursery.

I just bought something from Planting justice, price is not too bad but I had to pay for shipping.
But everything goes through the roof now. Roses that I paid last year for $24.95 is now $28.95. At this price I will be very selective.

Everything has gone up since 2020 in terms of gardening. Just some prices have gone up more at some places than others. I remember before the pandemic I could get a mulberry tree for 25 dollars or a blueberry bush for 15 or 16 dollars at one Green World those have gone up in price but not to the extent of Raintree which was something like 28 dollars for a cherry tree on Gisela 5 or 31 got a cherry tree on Gisela 3 and I’d now 60 dollars for either. I agree shipping can increase the cost of a plant a lot. I had a order of 7 trees at first from Raintree nursery. It was something like 70+ dollars for shipping. If you buy 1 tree from them it is 20 dollars shipping or more. One Green World charges me 20 dollars for shipping which is a lot for 1 tree or bush but if you combine orders of many trees (last year I had something like 10 trees on a order of 20 dollars shipping before they cut me off on combing them). Trees of Antiquity likely has the highest shipping I have seen starting out at 40 dollars a tree but they take more liberty is packing them than other nursery. Stark Bros has free shipping but their plants are very tiny compared to other plants. My peaches are still catching up to my other first year trees and my apples from Statk Bros while coming the same size as my Mountain Rose from One Green World my mountain rose apple had grown a lot faster and gotten way more thick than my stark Bros trees. Some of my Stark Bros trees come more skinny than a pen and look more like a vine so even though the offer free shipping their price point is high for the plants they are offering

There’s still a few fruit tree sellers that don’t charge both arms and a leg.

I got six nice apple trees from Century Farm Nursery for $22 each plus $30 total shipping.
One Green world treated me fairly on shipping earlier.
Found a nursery in Ithica NY selling apples for $18.95 each.
Isons is still pretty reasonable.
Grandpas? No pricing…they removed earlier pricing, so I assume in the upcoming season prices and shipping shall be higher.
Sticks of scion up to $6 in many places…just think, how trading is saving $$.
