How is Butterball as a grower for you? Wondering specifically about vigor, disease, and annual vs biannual tendency. Definitely going to order some scion.

I was able to order last night.
I was having trouble checking out after adding scionwood. There wasn’t a link to checkout or get to your cart after adding scionwood (maybe i missed it? Im a website manager/developer so hoping my eyes didn’t miss it). So i just visited /cart manually in the url assuming that was correct url and that worked.

I would say medium to lower vigor. Precocious and productive every year. I have not seen any FB. Most crabs have good scab resistance.

Crosses of any of these apples can be made and should be.

Any chance Butterball could be Golden Hornet?

@smsmith

They are not the same apple though those look very good. Golden hornet have a very pronounced calyx end and are 1 1/2" in size. Butterball is a small crabapple. Golf ball sized or larger crabapples like clarks crabapple are very rare. Clarks crab can get much larger with extra water or thinning. Clarks crabapple is hundreds of % larger than regular crabapples. Im not sure what the flesh color of golden hornet is.

@39thparallel Do you by chance grow golden hornet?

Golden hornet

Butterball

Clark’s Crabapple

You could not close your thumb and index finger around most Clark’s Crabbaples they are to big. See how Mike is making a C and then D with his hand there. Look around at the apples beside his hand!

Below is a picture of my hand with a half eaten Clark’s crabapple in it.

I agree Golden Hornet and Butterball look a bit different. I never got a G.H. fruit anywhere near 1.5", most were maybe half that. The flesh was yellowish, certainly not orange. I have seen pics of G.H. from other growers without the pronounced calyx.

I’m just curious I guess. I’ve got two sticks of Butterball coming in the spring so hopefully someday I’ll know for sure.

How does golden hornet taste?

More tart than sweet to me. Some tannin but not a lot. Fairly juicy

Had ‘Golden Hornet’ maybe 25 years ago, beautiful glowing fruit on an overcast day after leaf-drop. Loved the cutleaf foliage, also. Ashamed to say I never sampled the fruit, left it for birds. It died during a hot, sultry spell, brown leaves in a week.

Could Butterball be “Butterball Crab” from the UK?

@dannytoro1

That is exactly what it is. The USDA brought it into the USA. I’m not sure if they still offer it or if it is strictly in a few private collections now.

Our relatives in Kent say great things about Butterball Jelly.

Thank you! I love crabapples that are tiny flavor bobs, and that orange flesh is stunning. :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

Yup pretty neat. Almost looks like an Apricot. I recommend you get a Clark’s crab if you order as well.

Butterball is a big hit with the local wildlife. Deer, coyote, rabbit and possums tracks around the trees
