Smart choice in my experience based on the flavor.

Any idea if Milo Gibson will grow for me in N. CA?I’m hoping to not find out it’s like Honeycrisp all over again. Also, other than flavor, are they crisp? I can get by with Gravensteins (and banana apples) by eating them partly green, but I’d prefer to enjoy this unique apple’s full flavor.

I think @jerry said he grows it in Northern California somewhere. Should be a good variety for you. It’s growing well here in Northern Arizona but still too young to fruit.

Yes, it grows fine here in coastal West Marin (Point Reyes Station). It’s crisp enough here to be good for fresh eating. Don’t know how long it keeps, as I haven’t had enough to store yet. As with Grimes Golden and Spigold, we just eat them up.

Really unique apple issues. Considering Ulm Police Apple. A classic Eastern European multipurpose apple. Typical Sweet and Sour. Well known cider and juice apple too. A great medium vigor easy grower free of most maladies typically. Drawback??? Highly variable fruiting. 5KG pack can be from 25-42 apples{ie 120-200 grams.} Will root by cutting. Some reference to rootstock use. I think I will like it with very heavy thinning.

Ellison Orange and Morgana are supposed to have a strong anise flavor, But pineapple too.

Some UK apples are supposedly acid drop flavor…what ever acid drops are…lol

I’ve seen it described often as pear drop, which is an odd old fashioned boiled sweet (hard candy) that tastes like acetone (nail varnish remover)

Lawyer Nutmeg sounds interesting. Would probably make for a great baking apple if you are ok to lose the shape.

I ordered a 3-4’ Clarks Crab tree, along with 2 Milo Gibson and Red Cinnamon scion/m111 bench-grafts from 39th Parallel Orchard. Lets hope they like my climate.

Those orange fleshed crabapples look amazing! That’s exactly the kind of interesting variety I want to grow. Anyone have any idea where I might be able to find scions for a variety like that? Or maybe OP might know if the owner might be willing to share some scions (or even just the name if it is a known variety)?

The future for those coming after us looks bright with red fleshed and orrange fleshed apple crosses. I hope my clarks crabapple creation will be the beginning of a series of apples to come in the future. Maybe 100 years after me clarks crabapple will be all thats sold in some markets or orange and red fleshed apples will be 1000% more popular than today. Most people do not know these things exist. Mike and i enjoy making cider as well

So that extremely orange apple is the Clark’s crabapple that you’ve mentioned before? It looks so much more orange in these pictures than in the images in other threads, do they vary a lot?

I am not Clark, but no, they appear to be different. As seen at the start of this thread, these are some photos of the orange crab that Clark posted:

They’re smaller looking and totally orange unlike Clark’s Crab. From the same earlier post, this is a photo of Clark’s Crab:

Clark’s Crab looks larger and has the coloration (both inside and out) of a more standard apple.

Hope this helps, Clark knows more than I.
