The really unique apples

Haha, that sounds so weird!

That sounds great! Please let us know how the Smoky Mt. Limbertwig turns out for you.

Sounds like the Buckeye Beauty would be a great apple to add to my orchard.

Some apples you just know are going to be delicious by the wonderful aromatics given off even before you get to the tree. The first that comes to mind for me is Grimes Golden. A properly ripened GG is unique and heavenly. That golden sweetness of first bite is backed by a mild rush of tartness, all blended with that unique flavor only GG has. My wife picks these by smell.

Sweet 16 is similar in aromatic richness but you better be quick with the harvest.

Why I want to try Winter Gem. They say between Grimes Golden and Cox it has superb aromatics. But it is also a miserly bearing tree according to growers. And a scab magnet.

‘Butterball’

Probably picking this a bit early but they’re too good to not keep snacking on. It produces an impressive amount of seed for such a tiny apple.

I love the flavor of that apple too. I have bunch of seeds saved from that I got from 39th parallel, so there’s a mountain of possibilities of what they’d be crossed with, but regardless it aught to be something pretty good.

@KS_razerback @belowtheterrace how would you describe the taste of butterball?

I’m not good at describing flavors, but it tart, has some sweetness, but definitely a lot more tart than sweet, and has a little touch of tannic at the end. Very concentrated flavor that is apply, but different than all the other apples.

Butterball review (although maybe not fully ripe).

@KS_razerback’s description seems spot on. It’s a sprightly apple, more tart than sweet but still a good amount of sugar for someone like me that doesn’t normally doesn’t like tart apples. I bet it does make a beautiful and delicious jelly if you were so inclined, but also great for snacking fresh from the tree.
