The joke was not apparent to me. LOL means laughing out loud. you can laugh out loud at anything, even at another’s expense. the three question marks following the statement indicated jrd was annoyed.

text like j/k or /s (which means sarcastic) following the statement would indicate a joke.

I don’t know any of you personally so I don’t expect strangers to break out a random joke when I ask about processing goumi berries.

Following it up with a ā€œDon’t be so sensitiveā€ and a conditional apology instead of a genuine one ā€œSorry if that was unclear.ā€ seems to add insult to injury in this case. I wasn’t planning to follow up until you chimed in, requiring me to explain myself.

I’m here to talk about growing fruit, so I’m going to stick to that.

Yes, I got mine just after you and planted in July-ish in 2023.

One of them is much larger than the other. I don’t really know why as they are about 15 feet apart.

Here is the larger of the 2 with the cage back on after harvesting

And the smaller of the 2

The smaller one still needs to be harvested

I think I get what happened. I’ll just follow up with a few brief comments. First, I often joke in my posts – or try to, especially about my own frail memory. It’s not random; it’s a pattern. Sometimes I add a smiley face but in this case I thought the LOL and the three ??? were sufficient to imply irony.

Whether you would find the ā€œLOLā€ to be targeted at me or you seems to depend on your predisposition. I guess your predisposition was to think that I’d be attacking you, but that was so far from my intent that the thought never occurred to me. And I would have added ā€œj/kā€ only if I thought you (or any other reader) was likely to misunderstand and be easily triggered. I didn’t.

I’ve thought a lot about my personal style. I’m not going to stop joking, especially about my own failings. I never deliberately make a joke that is hurtful to anyone else. And I’m definitely not going to append ā€œj/kā€ to every joke just to ensure that no one is offended.

p.s. I read the exchange to my wife. She immediately asked, ā€œIs he young?ā€ She noted that she and I joke frequently with each other and with our friends (all 65-80 years old) about our failing memories. So she said that older readers would be very likely to take my comment as a joke, younger readers who don’t have that context maybe not.

I’m 40

We’ve said what we said, I’ll just keep the conversation on growing fruit from here on out.

So I ended up running the fruit through the mill raw. I used an oxo good grips food mill with the medium disc first.

I did it in batches and would periodically run it in reverse and remove the stems and seeds as I worked.

After finishing the first run, I took the juice and ran it though the mill a second time with the fine disc in place.

it took a while, but eventually all that was left in the top of the food mill was a thick paste of the larger particles. I wish I got a picture of the paste but I forgot before discarding it. here is one of the finished juice.

If I had to do it over again the only thing I would do differently would be to freeze the raw berries in batches as I picked them. I lost a lot of picked berries to mold after I accidentally left them out on the counter for a day or 2.

@Bigmike1116 You had mentioned use in cocktails - any ideas yet? With the astringency and tart berry flavor I can see subbing it in for a few different things.

Looks great.

Michael Judd of ecologia design says the juice works well in a margarita. I’m thinking in place of lime juice or in addition to it. that was my main idea

I’m not much of one for alcohol, so take this with a rim of salt, but I’m thinking, after seeing the picture above, of something like a Bloody Mary. A parallel to something like a mimosa springs to mind.

I’m thinking it may also slip into a gaspacho or a borcht without a lot of fight.

I had a post on goumi processing here:

I can definitely see that. I saw a recipe using it as a simple syrup preparation, and then another recipe pureed in a vinaigrette for a salad. Interesting ideas.
