i’ve been thinking about getting a waingaro. any recs on which other varieties to get for pollination? all others i currently have are early season ones.
Feijoas are mostly self pollinated - contrary to what you may read. There might be a variety or two that is cross pollinated. But not in my experience.
So one Waingaro flower will pollinate another.
I’m not doubting you, but how do you know? ![]()
I’ve seen numerous trees in town - not one tree nearby. Lone trees with fruit on them.
And Mark Albert said the same thing.
I do find that I get a lot more fruit if I pollinate them. I use a child’s paint brush, because I’m pretty childish. Mine are blooming now too.

do you pollinate different flowers from the same plant or different plant?
I have two distinct plants. One is Coolidge. The other is a seedling. I bring the brushes to several flowers on one, then several flowers on the other, then back and forth. Repeat in a couple of days.

I didn’t get any fruit until I hand pollinated my plants. One of them is also a Coolidge, so it may be that variety needs some tickling with a paintbrush.
I believe most feijoa need pollination. Maybe Unique and Takaka are exceptions. But my earlier point was about the need for “cross” pollination. The need for 2 different varieties, that is.
Once your bush gets large - like @LarryGene there is no way you’ll be able to hand pollinate. Yet, you’ll likely see lots of fruit. My bushes arent so large. 8 feet at the most but not as wide. And I still get fruit without pollination.
Just using my fingertips, I can molest hundreds of blossoms in about ten minutes, that’s about all I have patience for in one sitting.
Well look at that, turns out I got a bee to do the molesting for me. Going flower to flower across all my fiejoas.
My flowers haven’t opened yet, but I think I saw the white spot of one yesterday so with today’s heat perhaps bloom will begin.
I biocharred mine and my wife said we have more blooms than ever in their 25 year history.

I am in PDX, and my container Kaiteri had one blossom open over the past couple days. The more mature seedling feijoa I have in a pot doesn’t have any blossoms this year afaict, not sure why. Maybe my winter pruning on it encouraged more vegetative growth.
help!!! any idea what could be eating my baby fruits? today, i noticed the sole flower on my marion plant was missing and it looked like it was bitten off. upon further inspection, i noticed that three fruits on my unique plant was eaten. i also noticed that the hay on all of my pots are all messy. i just watered them yesterday and i usually flatten the hay and keep them all tidy. not sure if related, but im thinking maybe some type of critter is responsible?!? ![]()

Leaf roller caterpillars. I’ve seen the same issues with mine and upon closer inspection… leaf rollers. Maybe bt might help. I just use a long neck lighter and burn them though. There’s not enough to warrant a BT spray for me but that could help before bloom possibly.
Are there squirrels around? Squirrels here are always blamed for every unwanted thing that happens in the yard unless proven otherwise.
i inspected all my plants but didn’t see any leaf rollers. i’ll keep inspecting jic.
and im sure there are squirrels in the neighborhood, but i’ve never seen any nearby resident squirrels around the house. i have seen rodents around last year though.
That’s because we don’t like admitting that it could be mice or rats.
