Trees of joy

Anyone ever order figs from Bass? I’ve always read rave reviews and he seems knowledgeable and nice I decided to order some. Both were really small but that’s what I expected. One was exceptionally puny and expensive, so I’m not sure if I should complain or not. Here are some pics.

You’re not the first to complain about small expensive trees. But if it grows it’s really not an issue. You can get a foot a month of growth. Is that RdB?

I was just worried about the tiny side shot that was growing and the hollow main stem. Great guess by the way, it is RDB. I’ve wanted one for a long time and really wanted to make sure I got the real deal. The root system was pretty puny also, but like you said figs grow like weeds.

Those are rather small, although I agree that really doesn’t matter. I just bought a CCD Grise on EBay. You have to know the seller is legit though on EBay. Like say Fruitnut! The one I bought was from a good source, some leaves were damaged in transit.I got it at a decent price, nobody bid on it as it was his 5th CCD Grise offered in a row! I hardly ever buy figs on EBay but you can get some rare figs at great prices if you’re patient!

You still paid way too much for nothing more than a rooted cutting.
Bass charges $45 plus shipping for this variety. Reputation or not,
I’d be highly pissed, if I were you. Mr. Bass and I would have some
words.

I understand the reasoning behind paying more to purchase from Bass or any other seller with a good reputation, there are a lot of phonies about there and it can be worth the price for peace of mind.

Yeah but you don’t have to pay that much! Many other sellers you can vet on the fig forums. It’s crazy I paid 24 bucks for a Grise and 45 for a common RDB? Way too much! I got my RDB for 4 bucks when a guy on figs 4 fun was giving cuttings away for postage.
OK guys a lot of us here grow figs, let’s trade cuttings in the future. If you need figs ask here first! I gave away or traded over 10 plants this year. No cuttings, actual plants. If someone wants to come pick it up I have a 2 foot, 2nd leaf Osborne Prolific, from a cutting sent to me by Steve. I have two of them, I only want one. If you’re ever in the Detroit area, let me know and come and get it! I’ll take 10 bucks for the time and root pouch it’s in (15 gallon).
Let me go take a photo…just beginning to leaf out after being in the garage for the winter.

Drew,
I’m going to have a number of one gallon plants of fairly hard to find
varieties available in the fall. I prefer to ship bare root dormant plants.
If you’re interested, maybe we can do some trades.

Ray.

Sounds good, I might not have anything though, I traded or gave away most extra’s.One never knows though. I may have cuttings too. I don’t have that many rare types, but a few I do have. I heard they don’t do well as bare root, but I’m willing to try even this osborne, I might have extra LSU Purple’s.
I have pretty much all I want, but they will need pruning from time to time, so will always have cuttings if people want to try and root them. Just for the cost of postage.

Whether or not I was disappointed with something like that would depend on if there was a stated size when I bought it and I got something smaller. I remember when buying bamboo in the past, there was a 3 gallon rare bamboo I got for $100, took it out of the pot, about all the soil falls away and barely a 1 gallon plant.

I had the exact same thing happen - when the soil fell away you could see the shape of the pot it must have been in a few weeks earlier.

I have RDB and two CDD’s, too bad they have been dying back to the ground for three years in a row or I would have lots of cuttings to give away.

Mine are staying in pots, so i expect eventually to have cuttings. I may not have many next winter, but for sure the winter after that I’ll have ton’s.
The first winter in the garage went as well as one could hope. Zero dieback. No protection other than the garage itself. So that made it easy, just shove them in and open in spring!

I was just a little irked, I’m sure they will be fine though. Next time I want a variety I guess I better just post in here and see if someone has it for sale or trade.

Yes, ask here. Eventually, once the figs are bigger, be able to air layer plants for people. I want to practice the technique, anybody know of any good tutorials or methods? The 2nd leaf figs seem big enough to do it. If anybody wants one? I want to practice anyway! I don’t know? Maybe too small still at 2nd leaf to lop off a rooted branch?

Figs do well, when shipped dormant bare root. Have sent and
received that way many times.

Some nurseries say they ship poorly bare root. Probably more to do with where they are, and what they want to charge. Thanks, yes I’ll let you know what I have, when the time comes.

The key word is dormant. Anything will ship successfully,
if it’s dormant.

A member here sent me cuttings of rdb and others. The rdb did well, with three out of four rooting.
I think the members I’ve dealt with on this forum are great people.
If these grow well, I will happily pay it forward when I can.

Personally, I give away a lot of plants for free to friends. But if you run a business, it is a totally different story. It is just a buyer and seller, supply and demand. It is just not cheap to pay $40+ for a small fig plant.

Exactly, I owe karma, so I’ll eventually have stuff.
